Broken Earphone Jack On Laptop

My laptop's (Sony Vaio) earphone jack will only transmit sound to the right earphone. It's been like this for more than a year but all I had to do to be able to hear sound in the left earphone was to pull the cable a little bit and keep it held.

That worked grand because I wasn't bothered getting it fixed and I could still hear sound when I wished.

But now that's stopped working. It still transmits sound to the right earphone but I am unable to hear sound from the left earphone, even when I pull it.

    Would anybody here know:
    1. What may have caused the initial problem?

    2. What may be wrong with it now?

    3. How/(can) I fix it?

    4. What damage I may caused to the jack by exerting the pulling force on it?

The earphones themselves are grand, they work in my iPod. It's just annoying while listening to music or on YouTube.

Any help would be great. :)

    Thanks
