Recommend a car please - €4k

I'm looking to spend up to €4k on a car, need to buy a car fairly quick (like this week). I'd like it to be some combination of fun, fast, good-looking. I don't mind if it's petrol or diesel, probably go for a petrol tbh. I'd like RWD but it's not a deal breaker.

Cars like a Golf GTI with the 1.8T engine would be nice (particularly if it's 180bhp), I'm also a fan of MR2s but it's hard to find a clean one. I like the E46 325CI, not as convinced by the 318CI though.

Open to suggestions. Little help please!

S3's are quality, can't get quoted for one online though so I wouldn't be too optimistic. I'll try out a few more insurers. Even an A3 1.8T would be alright though. As a rule of thumb, anything over 200bhp I probably won't be able to get insured on at a decent price.

History check on this car checks out.

I've spoken to the owner, nice person, has a child and the 3 dr is killing her. She has owned it 18 months and just had everything sorted but I think she said she was pregnant again or something like that.

I was going to buy it this evening but decided it would just be too expensive for me to run :)

It's the best one out there.

There is a 2003 black one on dd with cream leather interior but it's sold in case someone posts it

If your considering the Celica above you might as well look at the Hyundai Coupe aswell! (Celica's are probably better though) http://www.carzone.ie/search/Hyundai/Coupe/1.6i-SPO/201135204226069/advert?channel=CARS

A Hyundai Coupe is just a fur coat with no knickers. All show and no go.

OP, an Audi TT Quattro might be worth looking at:

Asking €5,500 though, which is well above the OP's limit....

    Mazda MX-5, Nissan S13/S14/180SX?
I haven't looked as I'm on my phone but they should be within budget.

if the op is struggling to get a quote on a s3 i cant see a tt being any easier to get insured on.

Thanks lads. That Golf GTI looks a beaut, might head up to Dublin for a look. I hadn't really thought of the Audi TT, bit expensive that one. The Octavia VRS is class, and Pug GTI's are cool cars, I had been looking at 205GTI's before.

I'm going to have a look at a Celica this morning to see what it drives like, it's looks ****e compared to the one posted above http://www.jasonobriencars.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=764879

The S3 is 225bhp, the TT is 180bhp, insurance may not be as high.

The 180SX and S13 came with 173bhp,137bhp and 207bhp options, I'd say one of them could be gotten.
If anything, just finding a clean one would be the hardest part.

    Wild card?
    Suzuki cappuccino!! :D

Piggybacking on to this thread as I have pretty much the same criteria for a new motor.

Only doing 11k miles a year so don't think diesel is called for, roughly 60% motorway and 40% Urban. Tempted by an E46 M Sport Coupe but running costs seem to be a bit nuts. 5 years no claims so insurance shouldn't be as much as an issue as the OP.

Properly tempted by a 240BHP Mini Cooper S that has been worked on by a specialist in the UK, any thoughts?

I can imagine the phone call:

Them: Has the car been modified?

You: Yes, just a little bit.

    Them: What are the modifications?

You: Can I call you back from a landline?

    Go on, buy it!

You know you should. I'll throw €5 into the kitty, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one.

p.s. Apologies if I'm out of date on your Puma saga - I haven't been surfing this forum for a while. :D
