I've seen tiles with squares of fabric or paper adhered to them and they have been mod podged to make them liquid-proof. Was going to give it a go but wondered if anyone else had done it and if they are really liquid-proof or does the fabric fray. No point in doing it if I can't put a hot mug of tea on them.

Do you mean a ceramic tile with a square of fabric on top? My reaction would be that you would need to use varnish to make them moisture proof. Modge podge is related to PVA adhesive I think, and PVA would definitely go sticky if it got wet. Can you link to a pic of one of these tiles as its a bit difficult to know exactly what you mean?

I found the link and you are right, I must have missed that, they used a glaze, which I assume is what you meant.
