Hi Lads I was just wondering if anyone had experienced any problems with the picture quality of Channel 5 tonight during the Man Utd match. I found the picture almost unwatchable very blurry especially when showing the crowd and on match replays, I had to turn back to 3e which wasnt great but significantly better then channel 5.

As Channel 5 were the host broadcaster how in the name of god is this possible or is it a problem with my sky box?

Watched the match also on channel 5 and it was poor at times.

Aye it was like the match director chose the 360p option on YouTube.

    I think it's down to 2 reasons;

    1. It's because Ch5 have crammed all 10 channels on to 1 transponder on Astra 1N and their transmission encoders don't seem to be as good as others - (say ITVs which has 10 channels on another TP on Astra 1N).

    2. It's live so the encoding is done on the fly which leads to artifacts and blocking on the screen - combined with the crappy encoders they seem to have and you get the picture last night.

I ended up switching to 3e as well.

Yep same here, I didn't watch the game but did catch some of the half time replays and a few very blocky moments. Pity C5 do everything on the cheap, the +1 channels esp are quite ropey at times.

Nothing to do with it,picture quality has been shocking since they moved to 1N,it's really noticable with football and fast moving images. The quality was on par with a PS1 game at times.

Also the quality during the Barca match on RTE2 via satellite was woeful the other night, blurry picture & juddery framerate,I thought at one point they were broadcasting an illegal internet stream.

Wouldnt you think that in all this HD age that sky itself would have a say in the quality of channels on its platform or are the trying on purpose to sell more high definition packages i wonder.

I've notice the picture quality has become very poor even watching programmes like NCIS and the picture also seems very dark.

This is being discussed on DS,it seems the quality falls within Sky's parameters for acceptable picture quality.Lego vision must be the standard they use so.

so much for digital tv, the quality on analogue was much better for most channels, not just channel 5.

Many of the music videos shown on 'Vintage TV' (Sky 369 and FTA), suffer from very severe 'leggo'/blocking effects too during rapid movement/ camera panning. Its very bad on many 1980s American music videos they show.
Picture quality during their ad breaks etc is relatively OK. Obviously the main problem there is that the original analogue recordings were poorly digitised.

i know im slightly off thread but i have moved from a crt tv to panasonic lcd recently and have noticed that poor quality pictures look worse on lcd tv while good quality looks brilliant, generally speaking there is a much greater range to the quality of the picture on modern tvs

    Yes ,thats very true.
Standard definition programming on a crt will look far better than on most lcd's or plasmas.
You really need a HD source to get the best use of a flat screen tv but thats only feasible for 40-50 channels.
Low bitrate SD looks horrific on an LCD.

yeah i noticed that too, we have our sky fed into the kitchen on a very old 21" crt tv the and sd channels look noticeably better on it than on our flat screen lcd tv in the living room, only the Hd channels look really well on the flatscreen.
