Ahh, so the NEW Apple TV (3) was ALWAYS the price since it's release YESTERDAY! Thanks for the info guys....

This is being offered at the SAME price as the ATV2. That's my point.

That's pretty much how apple price most of their new products. They discount the old one and the new one is priced the same as the old one.

Is this not the new one at €109
    I ordered one earlier

I remember looking a few weeks back and Apple TV was €121 or €123 - I forget which

It's not the same price. The new price has dropped in Ireland from €129 to €109.

Any opinions on the device? Was thinking of getting this, or a WD media drive.

What did they leave out of this model that they can then add to version 4 so as to get suckers to buy it when it's launched??

Go for the WD. From what I've read of these, they need to be jailbroken before they're anyway useful.

I've been using a WD TV Live for the past 2 years and it's great.

Depends what you need it for.

If it's all legit stuff and you have a Mac/iPad/iPhone then go for the Apple TV. It also has Netflix and a slick UI.

The newest WD also has Netflix and has a decent UI also. You can attach external drives/usb keys to it too.

This is coming from an Apple fan by the way.

Take a look at the Boxee as well now that is down to a more reasonable price.

Bought one in Feb and it was €121.
The one I bought before that, prior to the vat increase, was €119.

I have the WD TV Live Hub (which sites at the top of the WDTV range). Netflix is not present on it - even though it is in the US. I'm running the latest firmware too (released last week).

The UI is not bad, but certainly not as fluid or slick as am Apple TV (which I also have owned, and just ordered the next gen version).

I wouldn't hold the fact that it needs to be jailbroken to be of any real use as a big factor n purchasing or not, it's a five minute job.

It all depends what you want. You can't attach any external storage but with XBMC or Plex installed, it will play pretty much any format you have, has a nice UI, tags your files with pics, info etc.

I use mine for streaming all my local media I have on a Mac to my plasma in the front room and it works great. Movies, TV shows, Music, photos. Can also be used for Netflix. You can also rent movies and tv shows from iTunes out of the box and stream any iTunes content you have on a local server without a jailbreak. Also the unit itself is tiny and sits under any tv and you barely notice its there.

If I had one of these could I copy AVI files from my PC and watch them?

You'd need to jailbreak it first and then you could share the files on your PC to your ATV, so you could see the the avi files that are on your PC on the ATV and stream them locally from PC to ATV.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll stick with my 8GB USB Stick straight into the TV and copy files onto it as I need them.

ATV with XBMC & a NAS is the way to go. I have this with 2 ATV devices and it works sweetly. However, getting to this position was lots of fun & I am a software engineer. Not for the non IT person to do.

I have all media including our home movies \ pics streamed to the devices. Is very sweet.

I'm inclined to pay the bit extra and go for the Boxee box as it has a full browser in addition to handling anything the ATV or WDTV can. The fact that the Boxee can handle Silverlight is a big plus for me.

    Any opinions?

we are probably all off topic here as there is another thread regarding the ATV,however

after being aprehensive as to wether or not to buy the ATV i took the plunge for Xmas.

In its normal format it is not that versatile,i Jailbroke it straight away and installed software from company called Flashcore(ATV flash black)

as it stands i now have full web browsing capability and with the range of addons available for XBMC the ATV is far more versatile than any other media source i have seen,it will also output 1080 with some tweaking.

Add Plex to the above and the fact i can stream from my Android phone to the ATV and vice versa and have an XBMC remote on my phone, the possibilities are endless with ATV.

From reading this as far as I can see there is a new version of the apple TV. If this is the case then it's quite possible that its not possible to jailbreak it right now. I bought the ATV2 a while ago and after jailbreak and XBMC install I love it.

Anyone know if the Sky Go App can be streamed to Apple TV, would really save having to get another box for bedroom...kinda guessing I wouldn't be that lucky though and the answer is no, but just checking anyway....
