I have had to wipe a drive, mainly to make sure that it got rid of all the malware on there. It was riddled.

Had no XP cd so used someone elses, same version, Win XP Home.
Everything has installed ok, but it didn't ask me to type in the validation key which is on the machine.
Doing updates at the moment and I thought it might prompt for a valid key then, but hasn't.

Can I assume that it's ok or will this come back to bite me in the arse?

Some computers will automatically put in the key when you go to reinstall it. You should be fine.

Don't worry, XP will be sure to remind you if its not activated, its not shy about it either!

If you want to make sure, goto start>run> and type "msoobe /a" (without quotes)

And if that doesnt work try "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A"

    :pac:

    That's what I thought. lol

    Tried that. Not found.
And if that doesnt work try "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A"

    Tired that. Nothing happened.

Well everything is updated now and running fine. No Activation/Validation request yet, so guess it's ok. ;)

Is it a DELL computer, A lot of Dell computers has the serial key built into the BIOS so it should be alright.

Yeah, it is an old Dell.
I thought that could have been the reason as well.
Anyway, as said in last post, everything seems to be ok anyway. :)

    Thanks guys.

Most OEM manufacturers build the license into the bios in the SLIC table. This basically tells Windows that it is genuine without having to mess around with activation keys.
