Does anyone know what all this stuff about sanctioned players and the like is?

I was never involved with the GAA at home but I suppose I might have been registered with my parish in Cumann na mBunscoil or something like that. But I never played either hurling or football outside of National School. Moved over to the US a couple of years ago and got involved with playing here. Apparently I've to be registered and transferred and all this stuff that I haven't a clue about, I wouldn't even know who to contact about it at home as I was never involved in any of it.

Has anyone gone through the process and know what I have to do? I won't be going home for another few years either so I don't want it to be some temporary thing.

As long as you've never played with an actual club then no transfer is required.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but i thought this might be the best place to ask this. If a player has transferred to a club in Australia what the story when he comes back? He has been in Oz for over 2 years. I heard that once he has been there over 60 days he doesn't need to transfer back but that doesn't sound right.....or does it?

its all in black and white in the official guide!
    http://www.gaa.ie/content/documents/publications/official_guides/Official_Guide_2012_Part1.pdf

long and short is he that he does need to make a formal transfer back if he is on the books of a GAA club in Australia as a permanent player of theirs.

About the 60 days, the only reference to that length of time is
A player who has received a Sanction shall not be eligible to play again with his Club in Ireland for the 60 days after the date of approval of his Sanction in Croke Park, but is eligible to play with his County
A sanction being a temporary transfer to US or Australian clubs.
So for a student over for the summer, they cant play for their club in Ireland for 60days from when they get the temporary permission to play abroad.
BUT they are still primarily a member of the club in Ireland and you could say are only being "loaned" to the club in Australia. They havent transfered to the australian club.

But for longer term emmigrants who make a proper transfer to an australian club and sever the link to home, this rule isnt relevant as you are NO LONGER a member of the club in Ireland so you need a transfer back there to become a member in Ireland again.
