Are you getting a black screen with a blinking curosr/icon?

Will it boot in safe mode?

    To enter safe mode:
After the PC manufacturer logo goes off, start pressing "F8" on the keyboard, and select safe mode.

    Try hitting the power button.

In all fairness you gave us one line with your problem. Nothing about what you see on the screen. Have you checked that lights are coming up on the machine. Nothing.

So with this lack of information expect some sarcasm.

Or did you just rereg to post that?

    (Call me paranoid!).

Ok I think my paranoia is justified. First post by Scogar in this thread (of all places) and the user name ends in "ar". Hmm. :pac:

Lol, funny you should say that, I was gonna say the exact same about you!

Just for the record, I'm a PC/server technician by trade, with 10+ years experience fixing them and while I've seen a lot of stupid questions over the years, yours still amazed me. The lack of detail is outstanding, do you think we're all mind readers here? Or that we might happen to know a magic fix for the problem YOU HAVEN'T DESCRIBED?

Honestly, if your that thick when it comes to this stuff, do yourself a favour and take it to someone who knows what they're doing.

@chin_grin & Khannie: apologies for the confusion, as sad as it sounds I actually made an account yesterday just to reply to this fool.

PC appears to boot but mostly I get a black screen. All lights come on and go off.Do we know what the lights indicate.

Would you expect anything less from a "user"? (Other than information). I've had some doozies in the past too.

"There's an error message coming up on the pc".
    "Ok what does it say?"
"Oh, I just clicked OK and it went away."

haha - usually no - but thats on a contract basis where the enduser is allowed to ask silly questions and we get paid to answer said questions :P

This guy however, is looking open free advice, which I'm sure many people would be happy to give including myself. But if yer gonna make a forum post to ask for FREE advice, at least give some bloody detail!

That you have it plugged in. :D

So you press the power button, the ligths come up on the pc and immediately turn off and you just get a black screen?

Could be any of the following.

    Faulty RAM.
    Faulty HDD.
    Faulty motherboard.
    Faulty graphics card.
    I could go on.

Basically seeing as you cannot get in to windows itself (from what you say) we need to first troubleshoot the hardware.

So the next step is to open up the case (be sure to unplug it first!) and if there are two sticks of RAM take out one. If there's just one swap it to the other slot.

You could remove any disk drives too (just unplug).

So it's like a mix-and-match chasing down the cause of the problem. Very trial-and-error.

Actually is the case very dusty? Do you hear fans going like ninety when you power it up? Could just need a blast of air.

What do you mean "appears"? Does it enter its boot sequence, do you see the bios screen, the windows logo, what?

    Describe exactly what happens.

    Help me help you.

Apologies for the sarcasm. It's just that being in IT there are a few instances where we get a bit impatient with the lack of information being given to us to help.

    Not very noisy.
It is an old DEll,dimension 3100, which had Xp on it. I formatted the drive and installed windows 7 about 8 months ago. I believe this might be the problem as I dont have the proper graphics's card installed for 7. Do you think this has anything to do with my problem. Thanks.

So it was running windows 7 grand up to recently?

If you removed the graphics card and only used the onboard (the motherboard cable) do you get anything coming up on the display?

This looks very much like a case of

    http://i.imgur.com/6AE2o.jpg

The OP said it booted "mostly" into windows. Without being a mindreader i cant tell what that means, but i assume it starts to boot and hangs somewhere. Some actual details are required.

This is the BIOS checking the installed hardware and peripherals before it starts booting the OS.
You should also hear a beeb, But your problem is more than likely a hardware problem. But with the limited info you give it's difficult to diagnos.

You need to give more detail to receive appropriate advice. I had a friend going crazy last week because their computer turned on but nothing came up on screen. They said it was making funny noises, weird lights were flashing, ttc. Thought that they had lost a weeks worth of work. Turned out that they had knocked out the HDMI lead in the back of their monitor. A simple 5 second fix.

Seriously. Look at his post history... the only even semi serious one is one about a car and even then he stays a vague as possible.
