Outlook Express data to new pc

My Dell 5150 would not start a couple of weeks ago and I was advised it was the motherboard that was gone and it would run near €200 to have it fixed. So I purchased a new dell 620 desktop. I removed the old hhd and placed it in the new machine (all fine).
However, no matter what I try, I cannot carry over my emails, contacts, etc from the old pc. There are many possible solutions, listed both on boards and other internet sites, but all for situations where the old pc is still functioning.
I have about 5,000 emails and 500 contacts (mostly work related) so I need a solution asap. Only options I can think of now are restoring the old pc by replacing the motherboard or possibly installing outlook express on new pc if I can find an old disk for it.
    Thanks in advance

Did you put in the hd as a secondary drive or are you using the old drive as c: drive with all the same windows settings?

    If it is a secondary drive look under: D:\Documents and Settings\{user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\

    and find file: [name].wab

    and

    D:\Documents and Settings\{Username}\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\xxxxxx\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    and look for *dbx file

Copy those files (dont move, leave the old ones intact in case something happens)

Now install Windows Live Mail and go to:

File>Import> Messages> from Microsoft Outlook Express

and locate the dbx file you copied

and for address book: Tools> Contacts>File> Import>Address Book for Current Windows User.

and direct it to .wab file you copied.

You should definitely back up the outlook folders before you do anything.

    Hope this helps.
