The chief executive of Nissan has fuelled speculation that the Japanese car maker may revive its Datsun brand to compete in the low-cost end of the market.

Asked about the move at the Geneva Motor Show, all Carlos Ghosn would say to reporters was: “We are not ready to announce anything for the moment.”

Japan’s Nikkei business daily reported last week that the Yokohama-based firm may revive Datsun as early as 2014 for low-cost cars in emerging markets.

Datsun debuted in Japan in 1932, and hit American showrooms more than 50 years ago.
It was discontinued globally starting in 1981.

Mr Ghosn says the Infiniti brand will cover the company’s efforts in the premium market.

Nissan might be doing something, they refuse to comment, it becomes a story.

Sure they're still selling bluebirds somewhere, that's as much a story as this

Well retro is the new cool these days so I wouldn't be surprised if they brought it back.

However, they would want to start marketing more then 3 cars that people actually want to buy in Europe before they worry about name changes IMO.

Anyhow.............it's great to see a bit of nostalgia but you have to question the point.

Nissan had one of the cheapest cars available to buy in Ireland for the last 2 years in the shape of the Pixo, a car that sold like hot cakes in the Qashqai, and a fun alternative to small hatchbacks in the Juke.
