Just shows you can never be too careful, especially around vehicle maintenance.

While the story doesnt give much detail, Always take precautions when getting under a vehicle and never take a 'it will be okay' attitude. Check and double check axle stands, Use backups and throw wheels under if worst comes to worst.

Investigations are underway into the death of a man in Sixmilebridge following a workplace accident near his home.

The 54 year old mechanic was working under a car in his garage at Corlea, Sixmilebridge when it's understood the vehicle collapsed, trapping him underneath.

Emergency services were called by the man's wife, but the father of four was pronounced dead at the scene earlier this morning.

His body has now been removed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a post-mortem and two seperate investigations are underway.

    this from Clare FM.

Not a pleasant way to go.

I had a tractor pin me against a wall before but fortunately help arrive. One of the most terrifying things I've ever experienced

Do the lifts used in garages have a safety built in?

I see mechanics walking under cars all day long.
I would be nervous doing that :o

    RIP

Garage lifts have manual locks built in, even if the hydraulics or cables failed, the load should only fall to the first lock, i.e a couple of inches.

I has a car fall off axle stands on me years ago....extremly painfull(still have very bad scars on my shin) but luckily there were people there and the car had no interior or engine so was a lot lighter then it could have been.:(

Called redundancy lads, dont ever get under anything supported by a jack alone.

What a horrible way to go. Hope his family are ok :(

This makes me even more nervous now. When my bro-in-law was working on my car last week, I was petrified to leave him working alone for fear of this happening. No matter how safe you think you are, invest in some decent axle stands and jacks, they're not that expensive and can make all the difference. It's never any harm to have someone throw an eye out the window at you working every few mins either.

And never, ever, ever, under and circumstances go anywhere near the underside of a car while it's jacked up on a scissors jack!

Its all common sense really. Stands, hydraulic jack, and a few wheels.. Better safe then sorry.

Condolences to the family. A truly awful thing to happen .
