Car Transporter, New Eu 2012 Regulations.

I am looking to buy a car transporter but I am worried about the new regulations. I see many adds claiming that they are up to spec to meet the new eu regulations for type approval. Is this only for new trailers? Will there be testing of existing trailers? I see trailers with plates and without, do trailers need these plates which show weights et?
I contacted the Rsa and they said it was only for new trailers? This wouldnt make sense to me that existing trailers that could be dangerous would not have to be tested. Am I missing something?
    Thanks

More E.U. regulation boll0cks where its not needed. Here's an idea, regulate the same fcukin banks that you're currently bailing out instead of making life even more difficult ( and expensive) for ordinary folk. Wish they'd just piss off tbh. It's a bloody trailer. Lights...check, four wheels with legal tyres ....check, brakes that work ......check. Dont need some twat from Estonia getting English translations from a Italian sitting in an office in Brussells to tell me that for a grand a shot. Arseh0les.

Make sure its not stolen if secondhand. Ive known lads buying cheap Brian James trailers in the UK only to have the trailer taken off them because it turned out to be stolen. Plus if your looking for parts some of the dealers look for the serial number and cross reference them against stolen trailers.

Finally if you get a good one or even a new one security is paramount, a locking hitch will not deter most thiefs as they can back up and use either a smaller ball on the the hitch or use a hook system that negates the use of a hitch altogether. My own method was to bury a lenght of box section into the ground and cement it in, on the top of the box section I welded on a ball hitch from a car and locked the trailer to that, in the locked position the back of the trailer was snug against the wall. It wouldnt stop the most determined thief but itll make him think twice about doing it as it'll be a noisey affair to remove.

Remember the saying "Behind every good thinker is a perfectly good freshly stolen Brian James trailer" :)
