Previous car still in name...

    Hi,
I traded in my old car to a dealer in early December 2011. I gave over the log book and signed it for ownership transfer. My new car is already registered in my name.

I've actually moved address since buying the new car, I called to the old house yesterday to check for post, turns out I got a letter from the tax office saying the old car tax is up for renewal in March... so evidently it seems the car is still registered in my name. Old car may be hard to shift (rover) and was probably sent on to another dealer.

Should I be worried about this? The worst part is, I don't live at that address anymore and if I do get any more letters, I won't see them...

Have you called the Dealer to find out what the story is ?

Failing this you can fill in a form to change the ownership over to the garage if need be.

the garage wont take over ownership. it will mean that there is an extra owner in the log book. this can make a difference to sales price if its currently down as 1 lady owner

u should ring the motor tax office...this is prob a regular occurence & they'll tell u what to do

The garage should have transferred your car into their name using the RF105 form (originals are green but photocopies work fine). This transfer is to their garage code and does not count as a new owner.

If you just signed the back of the Licensing Cert this will have no effect, and not surprising if it were to stay in your name.

I'd go back to the garage and fill out an RF105 with them, and you post it. You can follow up by checking on line on the motortax.ie website - use the vehicle transaction enquiry link.

Something like this happened to me some years ago too.
Some time after I had traded in my car against a newer one (with a reputable dealership), I got a letter from the relevant department informing me that my (previous) car was not taxed.
I put a clear note on the form explaining that I had changed the car and sent the form back to the dept and I thought that was the end of it. However, some time later I got a rather threatening letter from the dept merely restating that tax was due on my (previous) car and giving me X amount of time to rectify it.
I contacted the garage and told the sales rep I had dealt with what had happened. He told me he was fairly sure that he had sent the form (change of ownership I think) back to the dept but to be sure he said he would send a company stamped form to the dept immediately and that would sort it.
That resolved the matter as I heard no more.

I got onto the motortax office, they said to get onto the dealer.
So I did, dealer said that they'd sort it out and it was nothing to worry about...not sure exactly what they'll do but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

This happened to me twice when selling my previous two cars, I just ignored the letters and never heard anything more.

Once the log book is transferred over to a new owner when the car is sold, they usually mark it off the road so that they don't pay any arrears.

Most registered dealers can temporarily transfer the car into their name without it going down as an additional owner. If they do this it will show up on the motor tax website as so.

Sounds to me like either they are not registered as a dealer and are holding the current VLC until the car is sold on or they simply omitted to temporarily transfer ownership. If they are saying they are sorting it out then most likely it is the latter.
