Ps3 surround soundle problem

    I have a samsung tv(LE40N87BDX) connected to my ps3.
The sound works perfectly when playing dvd's directly from the surround sound system(lg system).
I have an optical cable connected from the ps3 to the surround system.
previously I had the optical cable going from the tv to the surround system and I had the same issue with sound playing from the tv i.e. only 2 speakers outputting sound.
I have the same problem with ps3 games and blue ray only 2 speakers are outputting sound.
I've changed my settings on the ps3 to point to optical cable and also changed the video settings in ps3 to show output in bitstream format which should output dolby sorround sound.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar setup and have seen this problem before when using DTS. I think the issue is that the game automatically selects the correct audio output and can control what speakers to use. Eg:- when i play Fifa12 the rear speakers automatically turn off and sound only comes from the front 3 and the sub. However when i play BF3 or MW3 the rear speakers re-enable themselves and sound comes out accordingly. On the front panel of my surround system you can actually see the speaker lights turning off when playing fifa, then if i stick in Battlefield once it goes past the initial splash screen they re-enable.

In order to work around this, i have then manually selected the output from the Surround sound to use the rear speakers. But the sound is never quite right as its a forced output (the rear speakers are playing the same signal as the front)

thanks but the problem is not just with games, its with blue-rays also.
I think it may have something to do with the version of my ps3, its one of the older 40gb ones and it may not be possible to play surround sound through these ones.
I've changed the video settings from bitstream to linear and vica versa.
have also changed the sound settings to and from hdmi to optical cable.
Maybe if i tried the slim-line version of the console it might work.
    I found the following on-line
"Since you have an older model PS3 (as do I) Linear PCM is the way to get Dolby Digital HD and DTS HD but ONLY if you are using HDMI. What this does is the PS3 decodes the sound first before sending it to the receiver for lossless audio.”
It seems to be saying that optical won't work for 5.1 surround sound for the older model.
