The Boards Indie/Alternative Playlist: Suggestions.

Right, so from the spiffing idea of Loadgoat comes this: The Boards Indie/Alternative Playlist (Beta :P )

I used to subscribe to some good playlists in the past but it seems the quality has seriously dipped and there isn't really one out there that floats by boat anymore, so why not start our own one?

I'm guessing this will be how it will work......... post some suggestions for tunes which have been released, are being released or are new this month, March 2012! The best ones can be put together to compile out own Boards Playlist and we can all introduce ourselves to new music through this!

Of course, if anyone has ideas as to how this can work best, let's be having them :)

Right before we kick this off, we should figure out the best way forward.

I'd suggest 2 songs per poster per week, with all songs having to be from 2012. I think it's too confining to do it by month. And at times no matter how musically astute you are sometimes everyone misses one or two albums a year.

If people want we can do a big playlist for all songs that you like.

I'm not sure what the best format of it is, i'm loathe to use youtube as there are plenty of threads in alt/indie that are youtube lists and i don't want to take from them or become them.

Soundcloud would be a good alternative. And it also means pages will load quicker than a string of youtube vids.

    Thoughts reactions and suggestions please.

Soundcloud would definitely be the way to do it alright!

This should be awesome if it takes off!

Twould be good alright. If only there was the ability to embed soundcloud links in boards. There was a request a while back but as far as I know nothing came of it...

Just so we can get a rough idea of numbers/interest could anyone wanting to take part thank the first post.

A youtube playlist will probably be the most accessible for all, i don't think you can do one on soundcloud?

I'll do one on spotify and can link it to anyone interested.

This sounds like a great idea. :) Always find myself discovering music a few years after it's release date, so keeping up to date would be handy. At the moment Last FM is the only way I keep up with new stuff.

We're already into march so should we give our favourite tracks up to know and then stick to 2 tracks per post?

If we go down the you tube route, would it be possible for posters to type the artist and song name, as well as the you tube link? Might save people having to go to a link who are already aware of the song?

I thin we can leave it open until the weekend for discussion and then start on Monday or Tuesday of next week, i know there's a few regs on here that still haven't posted about it.

As to what the best option is i'm not sure.

I'm leaning towards - 2 tracks from 2012 per poster per week and a youtube playlist as the most simply and easiest to access.

    :pac:

Regarding the playlists Id say a reasonable limit per week as suggested.tbh though its unlikely enough we would get too much spam and unlikely ..most regs here are moderate posters anyway...just a matter of filtering the spam.

Yeah Soundcloud is the most common sense way of doing it ;) Have some tunes on there myself >

    Here's a potentially useful resource: http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/2012

These are the top albums of 2012 as rated by users of rateyourmusic.com. Now there are a lot of metalheads and hip-hop fans on RYM, so some of these albums don't really fit in with this forum. But if you browse through the list you'll see a good few tagged with "alternative", "indie" and various variations of those genres.

And, of course, there's always Last.fm. We could search for new music by stalking each others' Last.fm pages! :pac:

Er My spam vid looks a bit odd now the spammer is deleted anyway..
Here another potential useful resource for ye..

    http://www.accuradio.com/#!/home/alternativenow/

You can skip through songs until you find one you like which is useful.

Ok so I started a Youtube playlist for this thread:
    http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE487BE473CE383FA

Only have two songs added so far but will update again when I come across something good. :)

    #1 Bulbform by Trust

Trust are a synthpop group from Canada. Kinda hard to describe what they sound like; a more downbeat Crystal Castles, I guess. With distorted male vocals. The album TRST was released on 28/02/12.

#2 Paper Wings by Frankie Rose

Frankie Rose is a former member of Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and Vivian Girls, so if you like any of those bands you should check her out. (Admittedly, Crystal Stilts is the only one of those groups I'm familiar with.) Paper Wings is taken from the album Interstellar, released on 21/02/12.

Isnt moving to an external site like youtube defeating the purpose..
Lets just kick off a few threads for general alt indie posting
As mentioned by lg we can stipulate some general limits

Taking ques from successful threads on the other music forum e.g

    1) Track of the day..one post per day per poster( a playlist of sorts)..
2)What are you listening to at the moment...implies nothing and general other than alternative/indie
    3) And have the Recently discovered thread for newish music exclusively

*shrug* Tbh I only started the youtube playlist as an attempt to bump this thread (also it's a handy way to keep track of stuff). But I'm happy to go with whatever way other people wanna do this. :)

Haven't added anything else yet, which goes to show both how lazy I am and how shít I am when it comes to ifnding new music.

I think the youtube list is a good idea, if you add the songs that are nominated on the thread that would be it.

I don't want another thread with youtube videos listed here. It's not the point of the idea.

Having the songs accessible on a youtube link would be great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,883 ✭✭✭smokedeels

    My picks are...

Earth - A Multiplicity of Doors

    and

    Imbogodom - Heir Looms

I haven't heard much this year tbh, so I'm looking forward to this thread.

Ah I see. Gotcha. I do see the pointlessness of having "just another list thread" and it wasn't my intention to try and turn this into another one of those...

When this gets up and running properly I'll set up another playlist for whatever songs are nominated and voted-for here. I'll keep the other one for my own use, just to keep track of what I nominate and stuff! :)
