Im an electronics student, currently working on an assigmnet to get two pcs to communicate. In college lab they had computers linked up with serial cables. i need to work on this assignment at home and test and modify etc. Would anyone have two unwanted serial port cables that you would be interested in donating to me?

You should be able to get them cheap enough in most computer/electronics stores, 3 or 4 quid I'd say sounds right

Sure it was a serial cable and not a "laplink cable" (also known as lablink or null-printer cable) on the parallel port?

You need a Null Modem cable with pins 2 and 3 crossed. If you search on Google you will be able to find the pin-outs and make up a cable yourself with a length of cable and a couple of female connectors, 9-pin or 25-pin depending on the ports on your computers. The number of wires you need to use will depend on whether you want hardware flow control or not. Of course your computers will need to have serial ports to allow you to do this.

It's a nice interesting project and would have been as common place in the 80s-90s as setting up a wireless network is today.

tried all the usual places, pc world, harvey norman, peats, maplins etc. But plenty available online. Problem is only serial port on one pc the other is a bit newer and has 25pin port. I could get a 9pin to 25 pin cable online but lecturer has advised id be better tinkering around in the lab during this study week. thanks for your advice all

As mentioned above, why not just make one, could always cut a cable with 9 or 25 on one side and solder the wires to the correct pins.

Have you tried computer repair centres? Also what part of the country? If in Dublin radionics/farnell
