Is it legal to ask age while taking test at FAS Internship?

I have applied for one of the FAS internship courses. Having passed the first interview I was invited to the second test. At the beginning of it all participants were asked to state their name and age (not date of birth) on a single sheet. Then the exam itself started. From about 15 candidates 5 younger were selected. I am not sure was my age the wrong one or I did the test not as good as others. Any advice?

An employer is perfectly entitled to know your age when seeking employment.

Although it is now common for commercial enterprises (at least) not to ask the ages of candidates so that they don't get what they would see as potentially frivolous complaints for age discrimination. (Clearly, at interview, the age issue may be ascertained.)
