Resprayed an alloy today

The alloys I had on my Avensis were getting a bit sad looking. Someone (possibly me) had driven about a hundred thousand miles on them around the country. There were gouges and scratches in a few places. The black undercoat was showing through in patches.

I'm not anal about the wheels being perfect. I just wanted them to look reasonable, not exactly car show stuff.

I have 5 alloys, so I experimented with the worst one. I thought about filling in the scratches, but turns out I didn't care overmuch about that! :)

Here is a a pic of one of my other wheels, and the resprayed one. I sprayed it gunmetal. Had to clean it, sand it, prime it, spray it, and lacquer.

I'm pretty happy with the result for a first go. 6955641579_555ba6a519_b.jpg

Obviously I've a little overspray on the tyre. You can see on the bottom most spoke a nasty scrape I've painted over. And a bit of kerbing. :)

Not bad, it wouldn't take much extra effort to make them almost perfect. Small bit of sanding and filler for the worst marks. And some masking tape! Good job though, they certainly look better than they were.

Have to agree, I think if you were going to the effort of spraying them you should have sanded down the sections that required them properly.

I can still see many gouges on the outside of the spokes.

Not terrible paint effort but the prep lets it down somewhat.

In the flesh there's a nice difference. I did have it taped up, but obviously not well enough.

I don't know do the gouge marks actually bother me enough to attempt a fix. Might try it for the experience on the same wheel. Will sand those areas down and fill.

Did you use special alloy paint?

No, I know they can get warm, so I'll just have to wait and see how they hold up. It was automotive one. Duplicolor something or other.

Yes was thinking of touching up mine, was going to deflate the tyres and stick masking tape around the edges of the tyre so I can fully spray the whole alloy, not sure if this will cause any problems when I come to reinflate the tyres, just can't be bothered getting them taken off at a tyre place one by one to work on, will take days to do.
