I do a course during the week but live at home alone. I hang out with people some weekends but not all.

Would your pet keep you company?

of course. thats the idea of a pet.

obviously a goldfish wont be much company (sorry to all the goldfish lovers!) but a cat/dog/rabbit/guinea etc can be great craic.

you may find yourself losing it a little and talking to them like they can understand but sure thats half the fun :D

    Oh yes!!:D

I lived alone for many years. Had two cats which were fantastic company for me in the evenings. They gave me hours of entertainment when they decided to play. Sat beside my keyboard when I worked from home. Slept on my bed.

And they would always have a wonderful greeting for me whenever I came home.

Now I have a dog. I'm unemployed, but our dog has been our saviour in so many ways. He gets his walks, which gets us out and about. If we ever feel down, the dog always picks us up. He gives us something to focus on other than ourselves.

Having a pet is a two way street. We give them the best possible life we can. They in return, give us unconditional love, fidelity, and companionship.

Of course, I always chat away to my animals. They never answer back and ALWAYS agree with me! :D

They do understand you, that's for sure, even if they have a different way to answer ;)

Absolutely. My dogs saved me from going a bit la-la when I lived alone

You'd be surprised. I have a fighting fish who is a right character; jumps out of the water at feeding time, loves to nibble my fingers, and will get all excited when he sees me. He's a very friendly wee chap.

Absolutely! I lived on my own for a bit last year, back living on my own again now. Last year I was on my own for the first few weeks and when I started realising I was slowly going mad and standing at an open window talking to the stray cats outside and to a spider I caught in my bedroom I decided to move my cat up! Such a difference coming home from work and having a little furry face purring like mad when you come in the door, and having someone to talk to without feeling like your going crazy talking to yourself or spiders! :-O

Not sure what to do now, might bring her back up but the stress of traveling takes a lot out of her. But definitely if your in a position to get a pet consider it!

Definately op, great company and they do understand you, they get you out fo the house for walks etc and you will get to meet new people that way.

You thinking of taking the plunge, you could always volunteer at a rescue and go from there.

Without a shadow of a doubt YES!!!Whatever animal you're "into" be it a dog,cat,horse,terrapin,fish...spider (:D) taking care of another being is the reason many people have pets. Humans are designed to love,be loved, have companionship,be responsible, feel important and need a reason to literally get up everyday.

Pets in whatever shape, size or species have a proven beneficial impact on our wellbeing (id go looking for papers but im too lazy :p).

OP taking care of another species is a huge committment, which some take far too lightly. If you're considering it and are willing to put the time and effort into maintaining its well being you WONT be disappointed. I get such a buzz from seeing my cat, on hearing me come home and beep the alarm on my car, get up from his bed and greet me at the door with his tail high in the air. Cue the "Beeeeeeeeanie.....how was your daaaaay blah blah",chatter from me, in the weird high pitched voice i do only to him :D

One of my worst nightmares is being told i couldnt own a pet ever again!!;)

Great company! Found my self alone 4 years ago after being laid off and through other circumstances ended up with a dog. Was the best decision ever. He always listened and was great practice for any future interviews! :)

Well since getting my dogs I've noticed that every time I walk him I always end up chatting to other doggy owners. Such nice people! :)

Yep. Dogs, like children, have a surprising way of forcing you to socialise with other people.

There are few things more satisfying than sitting on the couch, warm and comfy, beer in hand, watching a good movie and with a dog or a cat sitting across your lap, snoring away.

Without the dog or cat, you're just a sad alcoholic :D

Seriously though, if nothing else, a pet can give someone a sense of purpose - their complete reliance on you and unconditional show of love and appreciation can change the entire way you look at your life.

You still need human interaction, but you never feel like you've come home to an empty house where you're on your own. You never feel on your own.

And studies back it up - people with pets are less stressed, suffer less health problems and live longer than those without.

pets are great company. there's nothing like arriving home to the welcoming excited greeting of your dog. or sitting on the couch snuggled up watching tv or a movie. even just having your pet in the same room as you-you dont realise how much company they are till they're no longer in the house!

Yes the are great company and they make everything in life better.

(except the cleaning up bit, they make that worse!)

Oh God, yes! I live with 3 cats and a dog. One of the cats is officially "mine," the others are family pets. Our dog is an attention whore. He always wants to play and snuggle. And he talks. Lord, does he talk. And two of the cats are fairly demanding themselves. My cat follows me everywhere, meows constantly, sits in my lap and purrs, wants to play with the curtains, string, bouncy balls (and she's no kitten - she's 9). The other cat is pretty much the same, just not as talkative. And then of course, watching them interact with each other is its own form of entertainment. The two cats like to gang up on the dog and sit by his food dish so he's scared to go over. Or they'll commandeer the couch, with one sitting at each end and bat at him as he runs from one end to the other trying to find a safe place to jump on. And of course there's the old standby of them just chasing each other around the house, up the stairs, over the furniture. I feel like there's constant movement in the household between those three. I live in chaos, and I love it. :D
