450 euros or there abouts. Its a fairly big job as the front of the car must be removed.

It should be possible to get it done for €350.

That's what I paid for my 98 one in an independent garage.

Think the issue is down to the engine being transverse in them so its hard to get at the belt so a lot of labour involved.

Cost me 800 in 2003 and I thought it reasonable at the time.

That was the good old days when we all had lots of money. I remember one dealer asking just under a grand to do it.

To be fair George I'd say there is only one garage in Ireland going to do timing belts on the b5 passats for €350.

nope, there's a few i know. I'm having the T belt on a tdi done later today all in for €198.....beat that!

I buy some of my belt kits (gates) from a ebay shop (a motorfactors in donegal) and they arrive next day courier, for near HALF the money any local factor will do kits. Example, kit for polo tdi was quoted by local factor for €145, delivered off ebay next day for €79 incl VAt.

with or wirhout water pump its recommended to change the water pump with the belt at least every second change

I thought you were in the trade? Sounds like the factor was quoting you full retail price.

Do you get someone to fit them for you for €100 then?

yep George, the factors will give me no hop, I suppose i don't give them enough business. Yeah, I've a friend who'll pop the belt on for me. Margins are tight with the times in it - so every euro counts. Sometimes i have to go a round-about way of getting things done to save money, but hey - the €'s are better of in my pocket. You know yerself.

I can see your point of view but I also know that if I charged out the parts for one of these at cost price and charged €100 for labour I wouldn't be able to make much of a living out of it ;)
