    Are they taking the urine?

Why is it now so bloody cryptic to install an "open" OS.

I'm trying to install Linuxmint and the damn thing is asking me for a user and password which DON'T EXIST yet.

    Am I missing something?

The installer asks you to enter a username and password during installation for the main user account. This is at the "Who are you?" screen iirc.

If the computer was left alone, locked itself and is asking you for a password at a login screen while in Live mode, just reboot the computer and try again.

If its trying to import your Windows files try typing Admin for un and nothing for password, if not as above its simply a step to secure your account
