getttin Sky in today, however the installer was saying that FTA boxes you need another dish ...

we'll have sky in 2 rooms, and going to put FTA in another 3 ...

now im not looking for 4 or 500 channels or whatever is on proper FTA, just your basic RTE's (which will be in on Saorview) and your BBC's and ITV's and channel 4, sky one etc... in the FTA rooms ...

I thought and was led to believe it would be a simple matter of changing the LNB from a quad to an Octo and running the feed into the FTA boxes then ...

    can anyone clarify ?

you wont need another dish but as you said change lnb to octo.he probably will have one you could ask re price but could find one cheaper yourself.on fta boxes you wont have rtes unless they are combi boxes(that signal comes from an aerial not dish).you you will have bbcs etc but not sky1 as thats a subscription channel

He probably does not have one, but has plently of sats and it's easier to spoof the client so he does not have to come back.

The fact that he would willingly put up a second unsightly dish on someones home, doing the exact same job as the first one, shows a total disregard for the client. Sounds like your classic cowboy installer.

    Even cheaper here:

Got one myself awhile ago and no problems with it.

Less of the insults about cowboys, just another installer who does not give a crap about the paying customer, and bul****ting the customer.

Very few installers carry Octo's around with them for the simply reason, there is little demand for them and we dont get them for free, we get nothing more than Quad Lnbs when doing an install and if we want an octo we only get them where a full-home install is required.

Although 2 dishes are unsightly they are actually much more reliable than an octo unless used on an 80cm dish u can have problems with them in bad weather which is much more visible to that of a quad.

Interesting answer? Can you explain more? Why would an octo be more unreliable than a quad? Im not doubting you but just wondering? I actually find an octo i have performs better than a sky mk4 quad?

Unreliable may be the wrong choice of word here. If the octo were to break down, there are more dependent STB's ie TV's on the octo leaving the customer with little to no viewing capabilities in the whole house.
Whereas with 2 quads on seperate dishes if one were to go down at least the customer has some viewing capabilities off the other.
All depends on which system the customer wants/is allowed to have.

The sky installer is there to install sky, not to wire up FTA boxes all over the customers house, unless previously arranged or agreed with the installer.
Some people think that once an installer is in their home, then they're obliged to run extra cables, hang tv's,relocate boxes for free or little money.
99% of the time the installer hasn't the time to do these jobs either.

A good independant installer is where a customer should look if wanting these jobs done.

The dish location hasn't been mentioned, it could be on chimney and the 2nd dish could be located at rear or somewhere in close proximaty to where the FTA boxes are to be installed.

Not sure if this is allowed (mod please delete if not) but could you recommend an installer for octo lnb and wiring only for 3 rooms
