Hey i was wondering if my name is down for a council house am i entitled to rent allowance or do i still need to be renting for 6 months before i can apply?

And if i am entitled to rent allowance how long will i have to wait?

Im on Disability Allowance for a couple of years now and wanting to make the big move out of home and try live independently. Is that a good enough reason to put my name on the council housing list? i hear it is but just wanna double check.

    Thanks

    :)

Hi OP, if you are on the LA housing list for the area in which you wish to rent then, assuming all other criteria is met, you will qualify for a rent supplement! :)

    Best of luck!

    Hi Niamh,

Yes, as far as I know, if you're on a local housing list and you can prove that you could not afford the total rent by yourself and that you require long-term accommodation, then you will qualify for Rent Allowance.

Don't be afraid to have a chat with your local Community Welfare Officer or Citizen's Advice Centre, who will advise you on your entitlements.

Good on you for making the big move and I wish you all the best.
