Survivors UK’s campaign was prompted by figures suggesting that 8,500 men a year may be raped in London alone every year.
Rugby fans heading through London's Waterloo station on their way to the England versus Wales game at Twickenham yesterday were the target of the first major advertising campaign by a male rape charity.

The charity's poster has already caused controversy after appearing in London underground stations last week to coincide with the Six Nations tournament. Featuring a rugby ball pierced by a nail and the message "Real men get raped and talking about it takes real strength", the adverts will also feature on electronic billboards in March when England play their final home match against Ireland.

Michael May of Survivors UK, a charity that runs a helpline and counselling service for adult gay or heterosexual men who have experienced rape, said the campaign was a response to new Metropolitan Police figures which reveal that on average, in London, a man is the victim of a sexual crime every hour.
    ...

The photo of the poster can be viewed through the link above.

I think this is great - the issue of male rape nearly never gets mainstream attention, and when it does it's normally limited to groups that would tend to be aware of those issues anyway.
Hopefully something similar is eventually done here.

EDIT: Got rid of most of the article - forgot about the new rules

Not against the guys but I don't care much for groups hijacking sporting events for their own campaigns.

"8,500 men a year may be raped in London alone every year"

That's a truely shocking figure if it's true.

Might sound like a stupid question, but is it mostly Gay men who get raped?

    I'd imagine it is...

I don't think so, even the( im gonna go with) rapers might not be gay its all about power and stuff. Like prison for example.

I think it's trying to suggest that 'Rugger Buggers' are more than you have been led to believe.

Not necessarily gay, but proper statistics are seemingly hard to come by.

8,500 per year?! Really needs to be talked about a bit more I reckon.

If as with women the vast majority of rapes are in private settings then I would imagine so.

Something it'll be impossible to get statistics on.

they have ads all over the tube with pictures of rugby balls that say "REAL MEN GET RAPED" at the moment. Wtf is it all about? Why do these people feel the need to tell me about male rape these days?

I haven't been raped btw, does that mean I'm not a real man? :(

It's surely mostly only gay men who get raped by people they know? I've yet to hear of a case ever where a guy has gone to court about being randomly attacked and being raped. Ever. And if they haven't, then where do they get stats like that?

Plus.....even if those stats are all random attacks, there's still only a 0.1% chance you'll be raped in London, it's probably lower in safer places. You're probably more likely to get murdered by Yardie gangs.

I have. I'd imagine it's reported even less than cases where women are the case.

Also more men than women are raped in America each year, but they're mostly in prison so who gives a **** eh?

well I'd imagine gays get raped more because they hang around with gay people and in places where people are into having anal sex with men

Jesus lads, male rape isn't about being a homosexual, it's about dominance. Males who rape other males are not necessarily gay and nor is the person who gets raped.

Why the **** would you be doing a campaign in the UK about American prisoners getting raped? Are we going to follow it up with a campaign about ****ing river blindness?

I suppose I'd better say that was a joke before I get the boot!! You'd want to follow suit and learn to spell 'monkeys'.

It is. See the figures for rates of sexual violence in homosexual relationships from a study in California about a third of the way down this page..

    http://www.stanford.edu/group/svab/myths.shtml

55% of gay men reported unwanted penetration. While broader studies in male rape show that it's nowhere near as high for the population at large as low as between 1 and 5%.

There already was a campaign for river blindness, remember we sent all that plumpinut to Loveness in Malawi.

That was a charity looking for money, they weren't specifically just looking to raise awareness.

    What's plumpinut???

No, it doesn't mean you're not a real man.

Most likely you're just such a minger that not even a rapist would dream of dipping his wick in you.

    Stay strong

You probably never heard of it because prior to the public acceptance that it happens, I doubt many men would readily admit to it.

Come on, how do you think others would react if they said a woman rapped, you, a man? Would the words "get in there" or, as seen in South Park , the words "sweet" come to mind? (one of the lads was abused/shagged by a school teacher, I think it was Butters)

As for being raped by another man, well, you get the idea.

Surely, if young boys are getting abused, does it stop once one turns 18.

Personally, I don't like the way a sporting event was targeted.

Street gangs. Male rape can happen in the form of extended mugging of a random person, or can be a result of turf wars where families or friends of members or witnesses are targeted. I remember reading a British article somewhere: a teenage brother of a former gang member (who was not trusted to keep shtum) was raped to silence the family as the ex-member just did not happen to have any sisters. Apparently a lot of cases where the male victim is reported as beaten should really mean "beaten and raped", often in the form of forced oral sex.
It doesn't go to court because the victims are bullied into silence, or if they report the beating or the mugging, they won't pursue the rape aspect. Statistics are woeful for women, must be much worse for men.

Personally, I don't like the way a sporting event was targeted.
I think it was a good idea. They wanted to reach as many men as possible and knew a large sporting event would draw lots of men in a social setting. I mean, it was only a poster. It's not as if it was a big demonstration or something.

This notion that getting raped by another man makes you "gay", forces a change in your sexuality (if you're a straight male), is dangerous. Men will not come forward in larger numbers to report rape unless there is a bit more understanding. For example, as a poster above pointed out, rape is very often not about sex. It's about power and dominance and controlling the other person against their will.

This is why the stereotype of the american prison system exists. The men who rape are sending a signal to the other men that they are the alpha dog, that they are not to be messed with.
