Hey guys, im basicly a student who cant afford a car at the minute but really needs one as I commute to college in dublin from drogheda and need it for work as I work late nights as a barman. Any idea how I could get a free car? i know it seems impossible, but nothing is impossible.. any help?

If you can't afford a car I doubt you'll be able to maintain one anyway.

Keep an eye out on Adverts or Donedeal, but you won't get one for free that doesn't need any work done.

you'll not get a free car because oul cars will get €150 per tonne for scrap...........so any, running or not, will be in the queue for the crusher.

Matthews Coach service is reasonably priced and drops off in the City Centre. (their weekly/monthly tickets don't expire and can be used in either direction, too, so they're pretty good).

Failing that, I'll also take a free car, if anyone's feeling generous. Preferably something recent (no older than 2008), with leather seats. And I'm no mechanic, so it has to have recently passed the NCT with flying colours and be taxed.

Also, anyone who wants to pay my insurance, PM me :)

Ah no, seriously, OP, if anyone gives you a free car, I'm sure you'll spend the same amount of money fixing it up, that you would have done on a roadworthy car, anyway. :/

Insurance will be the most expensive thing. I've seen usable cars for €500. Cheapest insurance i could find last year (aged 23) was about €1,400 (and it was basically a sheet saying I am allowed on the road; it didn't actually cover anything).

free car right there^^ but in bits like lego!! car insurance in this country is getting rediculous!! someone should start up a new insurance company with a group of investers or something and do insurance for under€500 for everyone, but like u said, not cover anything!! sadly enough too many young muppets and boyracers wannabe's will abuse it:( its because of them people like me can't get insurance for under 2,500!!

What makes you so special? Lots of students move to rented accommodation near their college every year. Do that. Or rent close to the bar, so you walk to and from it at any time. Besides, Drogheda has one of the best train services in the country(not saying much, but hey) as it stands, it's not exactly an extreme commute.

This level of bleeding entitlement is what puts people off students. Stop making a bad name for us(well, I was a student until last year).

My mam says im special so thats what. ha move closer?? i did!! i lived in santry till Jan, couldnt afford it anymore because of taxi's i had to get from work!! so u suggest i move near cathal brugha, in the middle of dublin? do u know what the rent is like? touch on!! not giving anyone a bad name!! ha best train service my arse!! to get a STUDENT monthly ticket from drogheda to dublin it costs 150/month.. real cheap yeah. do a bit of research before try accuse anyone!! im not getting any grants, my dad is on social welfare and outta work, my mam works more than most parents in familys put together, and i do 4 12 hour shifts each week with college to not only pay for myself and save up for next years fee's, but help pay the bills at home!! and guess what, the fee's are being raised for next year by another 500 euros. giving students a bad name ehh?? thats the reality of it all, this is what students like myselfs(who dont complain that they dont have money to go out every night but actually help the family out as much as they can) have to deal with for 4 years. mate ur an absolute disgrace!! and shouldnt judge a book by its cover. its hippocrates like urself that make me sick.. think u know everything about everyone

That's not exactly close to DIT. Hell, I rented in the city centre to get close to college and my parents live in Clonsilla, which is probably closer than Santry.

Yes, they are very reasonable if you share with some friends, and they are the lowest they've been in decades.

And you'd spend significantly less than that in fuel, tax, insurance and parking driving to and from Drogheda, would you?

As for the rest of your sob story, if your circumstances are that dire you probably qualify for a grant. Fairly sure working 48 hours is probably against a labour law too.

Incidentally, I really hope you're more literate than this in your written assignments and that you can argue a point better than this when needed in your studies.

why are people like urself so retarted and think they know all? it was the cheapest i could find.. 300/month including bills. ive looked for months and months everywhere.. nowhere near that price in the centre of dublin or closer to it!! not less but atleast id own something that belongs to me and i dont have to pay rent on it!! i do qualify!!! and i been applying 2 years in a row and get rejections!! ofcourse its against the law!! but im not working part-time, im down as full time.. so shove it. sure can, and do!! been doing well in my exams up to this point, never lower than a 70 in any subject.. ur point being?

Assuming you are a newly qualified driver your insurance is probably going to be around 1500 so lets say that 125 a month. Lest also assume you get a 1.2 litre car that does about 40mpg. Thats about 8 each way each day, that’s 80 a week in petrol and tax at 86 per 4 months. If I have done my maths right your monthly running costs are now at about 466 + parking, excluding routine maintenance.

Try and save that for 4 months to see if you can afford to run a car. If you can, not only do you know you can afford to run it, you also have 1846 to buy one. I know that sounds nice and easy on paper but you don’t want to be in a worse financial position because you get a car.

Thank you sire, a genuine answer rather than a moronic one. i been doing my math aswell and have about 700 saved up, also waiting for my emergency tax to come back which should be up to another 700. so think of working like crazy for the summer so i can finally afford the car and college.. easier said than done though

Hmmm let me see I was never very good at math myself but seems to me that €150 a month on a rail pass is cheaper by a long shot

Did the OP not say that he work finishes late at night. No matter how much a train ticket costs it's not much use to him if they finish for the night before he does.

OP, you've probably no realistic choice but to look for somewhere to live close to you work.

e466 per month would be more then enough to get you a nice apartment sharing bang in the city center and you would have a much better quality of life with no time wasted commuting.

Plus you wouldn't be living at home and would have the city at your doorstep. Nirvana for a student, no?

I rent a bedsit in the city centre for 340 a month by myself. I have friends who share rooms or apartments who pay less.

Walking distance from Trinity (35-45 min approx), cycling distance from everywhere.

A nice secondhand bike is around €200-€300 including gear like lights and a lock. Can be used at any time of day or night. AND it makes you fitter to use it.

Cars have so many hidden costs they're just not worth it if you're poor, I'm tellin' ye.

    Is this thread for real?

I'd love my car to be paid for by someone els eas well, but realistically it is not going to happen. How much money are you earning a month?

But the OP could always work in Drogheda or do they not have bars in Drogheda?

Good idea. I'm sure the OP didn't think of that!

Op fair play to you for trying and yes sometimes people do give away cars so its no harm in asking. It is a long drive to Drogheda and back every day so maybe some friends could car share with you to help pay for the fuel.
In answer to your questions I think I would local on supermarket notic boards for a cheap car that's there a while .people do t often give them away but a car that's sitting there rusting they might want rid.
You could offer to buy the car in exchange for some maintainance work on their home , paint walls odd jobs .i know this works as it did for a friend of mine.
It's worth a try.keep up the study , all the best cathy
