I'm not looking for medical advice or recommendations .......

I get bad shin splints and have done for years . obviously running makes them worse.

Simple question, has anyone used orthotics to cure shin splints ?

If so, was it a success or useless for you ?

    Worked for me.

I went from not being able to run twice a week to running 5 times a week no bother.

At the start i wore them the whole time. Now its just when i run.

I'm actualy due to get new ones and will go back to Leinster Biomachanics, Dave was who i dealt with and they were 350. Some of the best money i ever spent.

jesus  , i was not expecting that. i was thinking circa 100

how long did you get out of them ?

They've worked for me too. I wear 'em all the time (had to get more sensible shoes as a result) but they're totally worth the expense.

Well worth it and they are covered by medical insurance so at the time they cost me 175 but this time they are covering the full cost:D

I've got over 2 yrs out of mine but they are pounded by 16 stone so someone lighter might get more.

I think it worked out at about 1300 miles i got out of them in total.

I got the orthotics years ago to help with hamstring and back issues, but never wore them. I wasn't running too much, so any aches and pains were easier to ignore. Then last October I was getting pain in my calves and shin splints, as I got more into running. So physio told me to wear the orthotics, I have been using them since then and no more pain issues. Luckily I didn't have to get re-moulded, so saved a few quid, but given how much they've helped I'd have been happy if I'd forked out. I originally paid approx €180 (in 2006), but if I'd had to get new ones they'd have been around €300+

You're better off getting them moulded properly to fit rather than buying the off the shelf versions too.

just checked with VHI and they only cover over €300.
    tight gits

So they'll only cost you 50 then ?

If they cover 300 and it costs 350 then you have to pay the other 50 or am i missing something ?

they cover all costs after you hit €300. So if it costs 350 euro, i send them receipt for 350 and they give me 50 quid back

again another question for people that have orthotics.

I got my orthotics (pegasus - sportsline) and i went for my first run in them today. Two things :
    1. they seem very wide,so much so that they are pushing out the sides (arch-side) and i'm pretty sure they will eventually burst them, which seems strange for a "sportsline version"
    2. the right insole is way over to the left and my two smallest toes are bascially not on the orthotic - just on the right one

has anyone else had any similar experiences ?

Properly fitted orthotics should fit your foot because they are formed from an impression of your foot which is built up by the physio / podiatrist.

I would bring them back to the practitioner with the running shoe and show them the problem. When being fitted for orthotics the prescriber should also make a recommendation for which type of shoe the orthotic is designed to work with. They will almost always design the insole to complement a particular shoe structure that they know works.

i rang him and he said if i want he will send them off again (probably be at leats another two or three weeks again :( ). I'll be keeping to Mizuno wave inspire for the forseeable future so i want them to be able to fit into the runner obviously.

Anyone got a recommendation for a podiatrist in Dublin? Starting to get more active with running and playing football these days and my shins are taking longer and longer to recover each time. I've had a bad experience with orthotics and it basically stopped me from playing regular sports for years. Really want to get back into now though.

My bad experience was that I went to a specialist guy in Limerick about 6 years ago, apparently he was a big deal and did a lot of work for Munster and Irish Rugby. Anyway got the orthotics done and wore them constantly for 6 months and had regular physio. Didn't do anything for me, still felt the exact same when I was running and I always ended up with lots of pain and swollen shins after. I went back to the guy and he had new adjusted ones made for me. Same thing again after months of wearing them. I just gave up because it was costing so much and I could never find and boots/runners that would take them.
