Not sure where to post this so mods please move if needed!
I work at a desk from home all day and I'm feeling the stiffness/tightness in my legs & hips. I've been reading about the health benefits of standing desks so I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with them, how are you finding them, did you buy a desk, tailor an existing one etc.? I want to try it before I buy one and also want to keep part of my current desk at the current height. What I'm thinking is some sort of box 17" high, 25" wide, 22"-24" deep which would allow me to place the monitor and keyboard at the standing level but easily change it back to sitting if desired.

Never heard of these before so had a look around...

So how does this work then? No customer reviews & can't find any others on there so presume they're quite uncommon?

A colleague had a desk thant had a switch/motor on it that extended it from a sitting desk to a standing desk, might be worth looking into

Yeah I was looking at the GeekDesk (currently awaiting a quote) but I'm sure the cost will be prohibitive. Just got quoted about €1,500 (!!!!) for a near identical one hear in Ireland. I know it's just a case of propping up the monitor and keyboard but I would rather an adjustable one so I could switch between standing and sitting. The kind of prices I'm seeing are just nuts though.

Couldn't you just raise your desk up from below by lifting it onto some thing of an appropriate height? You could probably fashion some supports out of wood very easily.

Yeah if I just want to stand all the time it would be easy enough to knock it together but I'm trying to think about something adjustable since I don't want to stand all the time. I'll probably put something cheap together just to raise up the keyboard and monitor (maybe a surface half the width of my desk), that why it shouldn't be too much hassle to drop them back down to sitting height

Ridiculously expensive & don't look as cool as they could be. At first I imagined them as a flight control panel like in Star Treck that supports you with a cushioned back & slight sitting pad (which would be cool). Added retractability to mechanically convert to a sitting position with the press of a button, drink holder, storage compartment & massage settings for extra aceness is an idea.

    Let down.

The spider veins mentioned in the smarterware article were the first drawback I thought of. Seemed to be a common complaint from older bar staff when I worked in a pub.

Before autocad it was how most architects worked, maybe some still do.

i switched from sitting to standing because i wanted to see if it would help my tight hip flexors among other things. I now stand all day log and feel much better for it.

made my own desk tho there is no need to buy a crazy dear one

never heard of these but would a kneeling chair have the same benefits at less cost and less limitations with space?

I got one in Lidl about 8 weeks ago for €90, it's not adjustable but with a few magazines under the keyboard I sorted it. I'm doing a lot of mobility work to sort out hip flexors among other things and I have to say it definitely helps. One key thing is to keep both feet pointed forward and to keep an eye on overextension.

Mobiltywod is a great resource! You got a standing desk in Lidl for €90 or a normal desk that you converted to standing with magazines?

What if you got a desk which is at standing height, but got a draftsman chair or some tall chair which allows you to sit and work comfortably at that height - then you wouldn't need to get an adjustable desk?

I got a standing desk in Lidl (made by a company called united office) it only has two height settings however so I put a few magazines under the keyboard to raise it an inch or so. I have a normal desk as well and dual monitors so I put one monitor on each desk and if needed I can switch by bringing the keyboard and mouse over to the other desk. I almost never do this however and just tend to use the standing desk all the time.

I've been looking into a standing desk for a while, and as I work from home a lot I was hoping the job would pay for it - they won't.
So I'm back to doing it a bit cheaper than I had hoped, like the look of some of these: http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dollars.html
Will be heading to a furniture shop soon, and my current desk is way too big for the small box room its in. Will let you know how I get on.

Used to work in offices and hated sitting for like 9 hours a day felt horrible but started a new job in a factory a couple of weeks ago and I'm standing for around 7 hours a day now, is there actually benefits to standing for this long?

I've been working at a desk 9ish hours a day my self for the last few months and my glutes, hip flexors and upperback are definitely feeling worse off for it, even with a fair bit of lacrosse ball work most days!! Its just a summer work-placement for college so my constant sitting will be coming to an end this week and im looking forward to getting more mobile!

No I mean just kneeling on a cushion on the floor at your desk. I try to do it for a couple of hours each day.
