It would probably help if you gave a rough indication of where you were.

You may need a digital aerial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 594 ✭✭✭rurs

No such thing as a digital aerial, but maybe you have a VHF aerial, as you don't mention TV3?
It's possible the aerial you have may need to be changed for a UHF one.

If you could describe or post a photo of the aerial you have, someone with knowledge of the area might be able to advise.

Also, if you could give the exact model of the TV, that might help with tuning the Saorview channels.

    Why is it so complicated!!

Unless I'm very much mistaken, an analogue aerial won't receive a digital/HD signal..

Not all analogue relay transmitters carrying the 3 channels - RTÉ/TG4 will be upgraded for Saorview. Your current analogue transmitter may be one of these. Can you identify your analogue transmitter or the UHF channels numbers for the TV channels you're receiving?

BTW there is no such thing as a digital aerial or an HD aerial - http://www.paras.org.uk/02-myths.shtml, http://www.goingdigital.ie/Info/Top+Questions/Do+I+need+an+aerial+to+receive+Saorview.htm.
Beware: There is no such thing as a ‘digital’ aerial, so beware someone telling you that you have to buy one.

Are you sure you scanned the Digital stations in the scan options ? It is seperate to the analogue scan.

There might even be an option to scan the Saorview channels manually in the digital tuner menu. They are on Channels 48 and 22 in Mayo.

Just had a look at the frequencies etc on the RTENL site, and the coverage map on saorview.ie.

I think it's possible you're getting your analogue signal from a relay which isn't transmitting saorview. All the relays listed here have no TV3, and there are several in Mayo which aren't transmitting saorview, but are analogue.

If you could work out which relay you're currently on, and then turn your aerial to one which is in the same group (either Dooncarton, Achill or Castlebar, or possibly even the main station at Truskmore north of Sligo), you might have some joy.

The other possibility is that you need to do a manual digital scan on the TV. Can you find the menu for digital tuning? Try doing scans on either channel 53, 47, 22 or 27.

It's not always this complicated, just unfortunate with the relay situation:)

    Edit: not quick enough!

What model no is your new BUSH TV?

I have countless problems with Argos branded tv that claim there tv's were Saorview compatible and which actually werent, they were Freeview compatible for the uk which is different to our service.

Also when tuning the tv make sure you have selected Ireland as the country as many tvs come preset to scan the uk and again will not pick up the Saorview as a result.

Some people just scan for the analogue channels and don't realise that they need to scan for the digital ones aswell.Had a friend of mine complaining about his new tv & that the saorview picture was rubbish-turns out he just tuned in the analogue channels as he didn't know what DTV on the tuning menu meant.

    Read the manuals folks.

Hi reaper, I'm having a similar problem and not getting TV3 through analogue. When I scan for digital channels on the TV it doesn't pick up anything.

Do I need to change the aerial for UHF one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 305 ✭✭reaper180

yes you need to change your aerial(which i presume the one you have is vhf)to a uhf, as this is how saorview is received

    Are you receiving analogue TG4?

If so you may have a UHF aerial (can you post a pic) but receiving your analogue TV from a relay that will not be upgraded for Saorview? Only 51 sites will be transmitting Saorview, approx 170 sites carry analogue RTÉ/TG4 and only 12 sites carry TV3. All 51 Saorview sites are live, use the Saorview coverage checker to find your nearest recommended Saorview transmitter - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-checker/coverage-map/.

Do you know which transmitter you're receiving analogue TV from or the frequency/UHF channel number of the analogue channels?

    Thanks guys.

I'm not getting TG4 either but I do pick up very weak signals that the TV doesn't lock onto. I'm getting RTE one on channel 5, Band is V/UHF. Two is channel 8, and the quality is garbage on the two of them.

Im receiving it off the Maghera site in Clare judging by that website, I've just moved here so I'll try to get a pic of the aerial tomorrow

Could be Mullaghanish VHF Chs D & G or Maghera VHF E & H. Looks like you have a VHF aerial only.

If the Saorview coverage checker is recommending Maghera for Saorview you will require a UHF Group C/D aerial.
