    Hi folks;
    I am not the most computer savoy person; and just a quick question about a HDD and a net-book. If I remove the hard disc drive from the net-book and I replace it later at some stage will I have to do anything technical? ie, will I have to re-install any drivers or the operating system itself?:confused::confused:

    I really appreciate all answers

    It depends on what you do to the hard drive after you take it out.

    If it isn't reformatted and the operating system isn't overwritten then when you replace it will not require anything to be done.

    What do you intend to do with the netbook once the drive has been removed.

    Actually I dropped the net-book and the HDD was damaged. I then brought it to get it repaired and the technician told me the inevitable, that I would have to install a new HDD; so he did.
    Anyway I just wanted to see if I put the old (damaged) HDD back into the net-book, I might be able to take some data off it without having to bring it to a data recovery service.

    Is the HDD easily accessible? For example, later Eee PC models are quite a nightmare to take apart and swap the hard disk.

    If it is easily done, you can just put the old hard disk back in and see if you can retrieve your files. Won't do any harm to the new hard drive.

    But it's probably easier to order some USB > SATA adapter (a tenner or so) and connect the disc externally.

    Yes I did purchase a USB > SATA adapter but when I plugged it in it tells me to format the drive before I can use it.
    Thanks anyway

    And you hope for a better outcome on the internal controller? ;)

    Does the adpater work OK with other disks?

    well one thing you could try is to format the disk then use file recovery software to try to recover it might work...it's a bit of a long shot but you may get a few files off it

    If it is asking you to format it the partition tables and information must have been deleted from it. Stick it back in to the internal connector and see if it is doing any better that way, can't see how it would.

    A few software programs claim to be able to recover stuff from a formatted hard drive, but I don't know how good these claims are. If the data is very valuable to you then probably worth talking to a professional and see what they have to say.
