Very annoying, is there a setting to control the fan? Why would it be continuously on ?

It's probably clogged up with dust. The 6000 must be 5+ years old at this stage, if it hasn't been cleaned it's probably full of the stuff.

If that's not the case, then applying some new thermal paste to the cpu could help things it'd be a bit past it at this stage.

Most likely culprit is fluff inside restricting the airflow. You could download Coretemp from www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp to monitor it. I don't know your model, but check out the panels on the underside, if you're lucky you can take the fan out and clean it.

Ya, you would need to make sure it is clean properly, you really need to remove the fan and the head sink to get this cleaned properly. However, you will be able to clean some of it by using compressed air and blowing the dust out of it.

The fan is on for a reason and that reason is that the heat of your processor is high. Loads of different reasons to get the heat high and the one mentioned above is that the hot air simply can not escape as the fluff and dust is stopping the exit of warm air from your system.

You need also reduce the workload of your processor by uninstalling rubbish apps that have build up over the years, Find out what is running on the system now using task manager and Add/Remove program and uninstall as much as you feel confident to uninstall without messing up your system.

If you computer is on the low side with memory, your processor will have to do a lot more work. It will have to constantly swap data back and forth on the hard drive to process it, this takes time. By upping your memory you laptop will be able to relax and chill out.

So, clean it, if you could do an internal clean better, and run a lean machine environment by removing crapware and doing a malware/virus scan, get rid of all the toolbars in your browsers and all the little utility programs. Upgrade your memory so your processor can store more instructions in memory getting rid of the need for it to swap date to the hard drive all the time.

Your antivirus will tax your system also, consider using a lighter more system efficient application, there are good free ones out there that have been written for systems with lower resources and they are ok. just Google it.
