Anyone here actually bought a car via tescocars.com? Any opinions of the experience? They seem to have dealt with a few Irish customers from the sounds of it.
I've paid a holding deposit on a yoke (currently out on lease) and, all going well, will be heading over to Holyhead sometime in April to seal the deal.

Sounds like they are just doing what other car supermarkets like Cargiant and Motorpoint are doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭backboiler

It's a bit different in that you can't test drive the car and they don't do part exchanges. They do the RAC/HPI inspection and give you the report. They also deliver to anywhere in mainland Britain (for an extra fee). It's really geared towards doing the whole thing on the internet. I suppose you're putting your faith in the thoroughness and honesty of the RAC inspection.

Call me old fashioned but I would not entertain the idea of buying a car I didn't or couldn't test drive. Do the RAC get to test drive it?

I bought a car off there predecessor (they were carsite.co.uk) until Tesco took them over. They were good to deal with over all, car was a described. It had actually a lot more extras than originally stated when I paid the deposit.

They re-market most of the ex-lease stock from Hitachi Vehicle Solutions

When was that Declan? I wonder has much changed since the rebranding.
Did you get it delivered to a ferry port or did you pick it up?

It was about 3 years ago now. The business model Tesco are employing seems to be the same with the same suppliers (Hitachi). I guess Tesco wouldn't run a shoddy operation for fear it would damage the brand.

I picked the car up in Bedford (not far from Luton) at the time.

Hmmmmm, the OH works for Tesco here, I wonder if her staff discount would work:rolleyes:

    Pity
I was looking at a BMW 520d on their site for £8k stg
Turns out the VRT would be €4,000+

    So unfair

What would the cost be to bring one of these over to Ireland?

An example being a Ford Mondeo Diesel Hatchback 1.8 TDCi 100 Edge 5dr. Diesel, Manual Transmission. Mileage:71,582. 2008 (58 plate)

    Cost on site £5895 + $99.

It was costing me almost 50% extra in VRT, then add on courier costs from UK to here.

Probably not but, no messing, they give you club card points. Not sure if they can be applied to Irish cards though.

You can get a VRT estimate on the revenue.ie site. Then add price of ferry, delivery or travel costs.

Not really worth it then when you can buy this one here for similar money:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=4813304263527190

Nicer spec Zetec with 125bhp and probably more chance of haggling.

Agreed, there is limited value in the UK at the moment compared to the home market. However the UK wins on condition and service history, there is a culture of looking after cars there which isn't as prevalent here

Miles are higher though and tbh in Ireland the higher horsepower cars are worth the same as the lower ones.
Motorvation dont negotiate on prices and although they are cheap and their cars are mechanically ok, my experiance of them is that wear and tear faults are not repaired within the price. One Toureag we looked at had the air conditioner faulty as well as the passanger side window stuck .

I keep filling out the form differently and it keeps telling me my perfect car is BMW 3 series estate.

WTF? I love my rolla' why would it do this to me??!?

What planet are you on ? That's peanuts money for that car....... I know someone who paid €2300 VRT on a 1987 car.......that was worth 4k...

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

11k extra miles is hardly a sticking point on the below example.

If they are both in similar condition then I don't see the point in going across the Irish sea for a lesser model when one can be bought for similar money.

It is though, with motorvation you are taking your chances, with tesco you get an RAC report.
Also 11k miles is the difference between spending 2k in maintainance over the next year on a dpf, dmf or injectors. Much harder to sell on the higher miler in a year also when its touching 100 and the tesco one is say 88 or so.
Agreed though I wouldnt be going across the sea for it, there are many dealers in the North that import ex lease cars direct from auction houses with a 500 margin so better looking up there imo.

So 4k on an 8k car is peanuts but 2.3k on a 4k car isnt? a difference of 3/40ths of the pro rata VRT?

My issue is that a UK person can buy the car for 8 grand but because of teh unfair VRT tax, its 12k before I can buy it. And i have to take a stupind number plate of 06d 1200000 or something too. I'd prefer to pay 12k to a seller, than to pay 8k and then 4k to the damn government - I pay too much tax as it is.

I think my next car will be from the UK though, I'll wait till the 07-08 cars drop a bit more as thats when the CO2 started to drop and, accordingly, the VRT would be lower.

VRT is ridiculous and I doubt many would disagree.
Can I try one more time to get back to my original question. Anyone other than Declan any experience of buying from tescocars or carsite?

The car I've reserved is a Saab 9-3 08 reg TTiD Aero. 58,000 miles. Approx. £8,300. VRT should be approx. €2,800. Haven't come across anything similar here within an ass's roar of that price.

Slightly off topic but have a look at cargiant.co.uk as well, again mostly ex fleet stuff. They don't have any 93 aeros but they have the saloon versions coming in at a lot less than £8,300

A friend of mine bough a car off these a few years ago and found them good to deal with, car was prepared to a high standard for sale.

The two 2008 models there are base spec (120 bhp). The Aero is always a few bob more with the 180 bhp as standard, bigger wheels, etc.
