Been looking around for a car for two days in the Dusseldorf area and most sites come in at €150+ for a Nissan Micra or similar, pretty steep to be honest.

Anyone got recommendations of local car hire companies with good prices in the area ?

if you play around with http://www.autoeurope.ie/index.cfm you can get deals on midweek rentals from the big firms downtown (well, for the week after next anyhow) for about 135 / 140 depending on pickup station.
Airport/ main station obviously is more again as they are premium locations.

if you are flexible in pickup location then http://www.enterprise.ie also do deals for <€100 but they dont seem to have a branch at the airport

weekend deals are much cheaper again

    Thanks Munchkin=)

Germany seems to be pretty pricey for rental cars as I've been through dozens of sites now (some whith 'cheap' in their title) but no joy finding something reasonable.

I'm just used to getting Enterprises weekend deals for €80-90 covering 3 days and insurance and can't seem to find anything similar in Dusseldorf.

I'll try your suggestions, my rental days are Sunday-Tuesday so my guess is I'll have to pay full price as there won't be offers on. Problem is 'full price' is aimed at the corporate market and so pretty pricey=(

try booking through aerlingus or ryanair, can work out better sometimes. also worth ringing up rental companies and asking for offers.

I tend to use brokers like AutoEurope or EconomyCarRentals for Germany as well. When looking at company websites directly, www.thrifty.de or www.sixt.de usually end up being cheapest. I just checked Thrifty for Sun-Tues in two weeks, pickup and return at the airport - the price was €130.
