Banking Graduate Program - Step Back for an ACA?

Just curious, if you were nearing the end of your ACA training contract and are soon to be qualified, do people think that commencing one of the "pillar" banks' graduate programs post qualification would then be a step back?

I think there are some good roles in these programs with credible opportunities for progression within that sector that its hard not to be tempted to have a go at one. They appear to be paying almost what a newly qualified ACA can expect in the current market anyway. Anyone got an opinion on this? I think its a hard one to call.

All depends on what you want to do with the rest of your working life?

I'm coming to the end of my contract, qualified, but will probably end up going back to College. Yeah, most people will look at it as "Why did he study it for 3.5 years and then go and do something else?".

If you want to work in a bank and you think that it offers a greater progression than as an ACA, then do it. However it might be worth having a chat to the HR people at the bank to see if there are other roles in that "career path" to take account of your qualification.

I work in one of the pillar banks. I'm ACA and qualified through the bank graduate program. I feel I have gained experience in the banks finance community that would help me to work in the finance area of any multinational company. Thinks like intercompany, balance sheet reporting, technical accounting issues etc.

My one advice to you is consider where you want to go after the bank and if banking is not the career you're looking for then avoid specialised banking roles e.g. in credit areas etc. On the graduate programme you have the opportunity to move to different areas to gain a wider experience (which is great) but this could mean they offer you a role outside of what you really want to do in later life. Just be careful.

All in all I personnally have found it a good experience.
