Rear cog wont catch on free hub HELP!

    Hi,

bought a cube AMS 100 pro 2 weeks ago.

I have noticed a couple of times when going down a hill free wheeling that the rear dérailleur moves forward ( like the rear cog is still in moving in order to free wheel ). So i took the back wheel off and gave it a quick rinse with warm water and some muc off bike cleaner,

put it back on and it didnt make any difference really. But today i went to get bike and the rear cog just spins freely in both directions. the chain still turns and it changes gear, the cog just doesnt engage to the rear wheel.

    what is the problem?

    cheers, Jordan.

Sounds pretty much like a defective freehub. And it seems that others have experienced the same problem:

    http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/shimano-high-engagement-freewheel-strength-shimano-xt-fh-m775-slx-fh-m629-577894.html

Although that may not be exactly the same hub, it has the same 10 degree engagement increment, which seems to be the source of the problem.

Back to the shop with you.

Hi, Thanks for your quick reply, yes it seems quite popular with the shimano XT gear.

Will i get this fixed or a free wheel replacement free of charge? bought from CRC in Belfast, heading there Thursday. Bike less than 3 weeks old.

Best to contact them directly to see how they intend to deal with it. I'd try to speak to somebody on the phone beforehand, rather than assuming they'll sort it for you on the spot.

A replacement wheel would be the best option, otherwise the wheel would have to be rebuilt around a new freehub, which means more delays for you. Can't see CRC doing this on a wheel supplied by a third party in any case.

this is what my bike was doing before it went completely, expect not as noticeable, it was much more quieter. but however i did notice it.

Er, no it wouldn't! Of course, the freehub can be removed from the hub body, so there should be no need to interfere with the wheel. Excuse my forgetfulness! That's a 10 minute job.

i had got this fixed, i went down to CRC belfast and they put on a new free hub ( same model ) free of charge and i went away happy.

3 weeks later and it is doing the EXACT same thing as it did before hand.

So AGAIN i rang CRC to tell them i problem and they have ordered me a new shimano hub ( a whole hub ) and upgrade of the sun ringle one and they are putting this on my rear wheel free of charge. i am also getting the new shimano hub free of charge.

They have accepted its a design flaw and are prepared to fix it for me, they are going to sort the monies out with cube.

now isnt that nice of them!

Hopefully no more trips and phone calls to CRC Belfast for a while.
