Wrong oil in a car

I've been putting 15w40 in my OHs 1997 1.3i Endura e engined fiesta and it's been drinking the stuff. It's also developed a bit of a knock. It's on the way out I know but it owes us nothing.

Castrol reccomend 5w30 for this engine. My question is, what kind of effect should I expect from running the wrong oil, and could this be why it is drinking the stuff??

It will go through the castrol even faster, its a lighter viscosity.

You dont mention how many miles it has on the clock...after all, it's 15 years old. How many of those 15 years have you been feeding it the wrong oil?

I've been putting the wrong oil in for 3 years as it is for half nothing in the local German hypermarket.

The clock says 76 thou but it only goes up to 99999 so I suspect the fiesta may well have driven 176 thou.

Don't see why a fiesta would need fully synthetic, semi should be fine

That engine would happily tick away on 15w40 :)
The 5w30 spec is a recent enough recommendation from Ford, they also doubled the change interval.

    Thanks for that!

I'm fairly sure the ticking noise is from me driving the bananas out of it any time I'm in it anyway.

Well the knock isn't good but I don't think it's from running it on 15w40 :)
That engine is little different to how it was in the 70s.

You probably need the tappets adjusted, happens them all over time. Simple job for any mechanic. Them engines are great.
