NCT - 2nd test different to the 1st!

    Dropped in the car early for NCT and failed due to missing clip. Missed deadline for retest due to stock delays at main dealer (checked a few sources for this).

    Went in for a second test at the weekend and they say my wheel bearings, nearside front, now need to be replaced.
    Question 1: Car is 2nd hand from dealer, ess than 6 months. Is this covered by guarantee? (I know dealer tried to argue at time of sale that it is only 3 months engine and gearbox. AFIAK legally that doesn't hold up)

    Question 2: This didn't arise at first test. Could it have deteriorated this badly over ~800km? (My mileage very low, less than 100km per week, mostly motorway - well M50 ;))

    Interestingly the test results for side-slip/alignment test has the result as N/D - not done - despite readings having been taken. Front axle went from 3.6 to 6.4m/km;
    Emissions are worse now;
    Lights, both times they only test dip beams, not full beam or fog-lights. Strange they call it N/A instead of not done.

    Going back to my own mechanic for expert assessment and if he says it needs doing it'll be done.

    Different opinions & different test lane equipment mean different outcomes sometimes unfortunately. It really would have saved alot of messing if you could have gone for the retest withing the specified time. Not alot you can do now except fix what you have been told to fix. Still if your wheel bearing is in any way dodgy, you really need to have it done.

    Not much chance with your guarantee i'm afraid.most only cover engine and gearbox.
    A wheel bearing will get worse over a short period off time.800km is more than enough for it to go from pass to fail.its not a serious problem to fix and your slip test could be affected if the bearing is gone.still well below the limit 14.

    Guarantees dont cover wear and tear items.

    Thanks for the comments folks.

    Agree if I could have had the retest done it would have saved me some hassle, but if the wheel bearings genuinely need to be done then I have to get them fixed. (I guess the extra retest fee is just a little bit of salt in the wound :p)

    Not being very car I savvy was curious if that amount of mileage would be enough to cause the failure this time round. Maybe it was border line in the first test and is now sufficently worn to be noticed. I guess the subjectivity of the tester is also a factor.

    Was also curious as to the liabilty of the dealer on this - but as has been pointed out it's a wear and tear item.

    Thanks again to all.
