    Howdy,

I would like to apply for a gun licence for the first time, I'm currently living in sligo, I would like to join a gun club, but not to sure how to go about it? I'm an ex member of the defence forces, so have been trained in firearm safety, I was thinking of getting a .22 for vermin and going from there.

    Any suggestions,

    Thanks in advance

First thing you'll have to do is decide on a budget and get looking for what .22 you like and feels good to shoulder.

You may still have to do a competency course even though you have past experience. Best thing to do here is go in and meet with your firearms officer and he will tell you if you need to or not.

You dont have to join a gun club. (gun clubs are for shooting birds with a shotgun, wel thats what you get the most benefit out of) you still could join though to get permission to shoot on the gunclub lands and help out with vermin control. Or you could go and ask farmers for written permission to shoot on their land. There is no specified amount of land you need or how many different farmers names you get. 3 names seems to be the norm for people though.

When you have sorted out permissions or gunclub membership you then download this form and fill it out.

You'll also need a gunsafe which has to be bolted to a wall and they will come and inspect this.
send the form in then and you have to wait between 3 weeks and three months for the licence to be granted. You then pay the €80 euro fee in the post office and wait for the licence to arrive in the post a few days later and then go and collect your .22

There's a lot of information on how to do this (along with walk-throughs and sample forms) in the announcement linked to at the top of the forum (the big red flashing one), here. Start with the big bold links at the bottom of that post, they'll walk you through the procedure. Ask any questions you have afterwards on here, we'll help as best we can.

+1 on contacting the firearms officer. My local guy was dead helpful, gave me no.s for the local clubs and a contact for a safety course.Just one thing,if you are going to get a mod don't forget to give a special reason for wanting one.(I didn't and it held up my licence for a extra couple of weeks while I sent in the reason). the reason I gave is i didn't want to worry livestock and this was accepted.

    best of luck
