Sky + box in Freesat mode

Have changed from Sky subscription to Freesat/Saorview.

Can the Sky + box I have be 'persuaded' to record pause live Tv in Freesat mode. It obviously has the hardware to do this with a subscription, however when in Freesat mode, these functions do not work. Can they be made work. Are there any tricks to make this work. Box seems to have a USB port at the front. Box is a Thomson 132 168

In the event that this cannot be done can anyone recommend a good Freesat box with PVR and 7 day EPG that doesn't cost 340 euro.

    Thanks....

The answer to your question is NO:( the sky+ recording features are controlled by your subscription card.

    @Willby suggested further...

That Item for sale is listed like that to trick people, it still requires a FreeSat UK card. So its just a sky+ box, to which the OP already has.

Cant seem to find that box at that price, 315 seems to be the cheapest. Did you say argos sell them? (Sorry for off topic)

I always thought the Sky+ features wouldn't work without an active Sky sub.

The seller stated in the "card trick thread" that he had a sky sub which allowed the freeview channels to appear on the EPG.

    Maybe I'm wrong.

Some of the old blue cards from England will give the UK epg & allow recording but these are extremely rare as nobody wants to part with them.

I have a blue Irish card which allows recording but I'm still stuck with the limited epg,in other words no recording for E4,ITV,C4 etc.I can only record the fta channels that appear with the Irish EPG.It might work if I get a UK ftv card & do the card swap trick.

The ad that is linked to about the fta Sky+ box states that you also need the UK ftv card also.

So if you cancelled your sky sub and got a UK ftv card ftv then you could use the sky+ box to record BBC, ITV, Channel 5 etc etc?

All the free channels with the exception of the "home" channels obviously. Is that correct?

No. You need one of the old blue cards that originated from a Sky+ box and they are like gold dust now, most were binned when the new white cards came out.

The ftv cards are white and won't allow recording, they just give the UK epg.You need a combination of both cards

Thanks for that zerks. I was getting a wee bit ahead of myself :)

The old blue Irish cards are no good then?

Only good if they originally came with Sky+ privileges it seems.I think mine used to be in my old Sky+ box before the new white cards came out.

No, it's not there to trick people, if you took the time to read all the posts you will see that the box is JTAG'ed to allow recording but still requires a card to load and record an EPG with FTA channels (as it can/ will only record FTA channels), you could put an old Irish sub card in it and it will only record the FTA channels on it's EPG (which are only the BBC's and some music/ kids channels).

There are also the 'Mythical Blue Sky+' cards which allow recording and can be used in any Sky+ box, including HD ones but these are like hens teeth.

    So to clarify.

1: A person has just left sky and is moving to Freesat. They can buy one of these boxes and insert the white card they have, that's now cancelled, and they will be able to watch record pause all the FTA channels i.e. BBC 1 2 3 4 UTV 1 2 3 all the +1's CHannel 4 E4 More 4 and all the +1's.

Am I correct in all this. It will record and pause all the FTA channels. If so Super

IF the White card they have is a UK card then yes, that's how it works, although you cannot record the encrypted FTV channels that the White cards allow you to watch that is why I include a Blue Freesat card with the box so all channels you can watch you can record. As stated above the Irish cards are next to useless for this purpose as virtually all channels (that are normally FTA) on the Irish EPG are scrambled.

http://www.freesat.co.uk/ - unplug the sky box. Plug in the freesat box, choose your Region (London or NI depending if you want UTV etc.) and you are good to go.

    Freesat doesn't use SKY cards.

Freesat from SKY is a marketeers wet dream. The are using the competitions brand as their own
I still don't understand how the competition authorites can allow them to use it. Imagine selling a drink called "Pepsi Cola from coke"

Avoid Freesat from SKY. If you want something that has an EPG but can't record you can buy a second hand SKY box for a fraction of the price. Just make sure it doesn't default to the Irish EPG as some of the newer ones may be.

An expired Irish SKY card will see bugger all. It will NOT get the Irish terresterial channels, it might get certain programs on Setanta, not sure if it gets Sony channels, but it WILL CRIPPLE your ability to see the main UK FTA channels.

It might be of some use in a non-SKY box to decrypt a few additional channels but a non-SKY box will not have an EPG which makes scheduling a bitch.
