Hi guys this is a long question. Today i recieved a letter from s welfare saying i owe them €1300. The story is.. I lost my job in march went on welfare in may got a part-time job in bar 2-3 nights a week so went on the yellow slips. I gave all the info they asked me was told to fill out slips everyweek and send in to them and i would get a cheque in post everyweek. I was getting cheques for €188 everyweek until jan when i went back to college and now im on back to education. But todays letter says i was over paid since middle week of june until first week of jan and i have to pay back they money THEY overpaid me.
My question is i did everything they asked me and i did it right, the slips went in everyweek on time and they where the right days i worked i did not leave out a day here or there. Is it my fault that THEY ****ed up in the office and should it be on me to this money back?
Sorry for long question any help would be great thank you.

Did you not think getting the full 188 despite working 2 - 3 days a week could not possibly be right?

Whether you knew or not that you were being paid too much, you will have to pay it back.

Well it was my first time on it so I didn't know what I was entitled to I gave the info and sent in my slips. What was happening their end? Who ever ****ed up will still have their job in the morning when its me left with the bill to pay, I don't think that's right

The Social Welfare may agree to cancel or reduce the amount you need to pay...........

    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Publications/SW2/Pages/6Canyoureduceorcancelmyoverpayment.aspx

    From the link above:

We must make every effort to recover the overpayment in full. We may reduce or cancel an overpayment, however, if it occurred because:

we failed to act on information that we received about you,
    or
we made a mistake that you could not reasonably be expected to have noticed.
We will only consider reducing or cancelling the overpayment in these cases if we could not reasonably have expected you to know about our error or failure.

If you consider that an error or failure of this kind has occurred in your case, you must tell us immediately.
