3" soil stack/vent - do I need a 4" one?

I sometimes get the odd whiff out the back of the house (we have a septic tank).

Someone mentioned to me once that the pipe of my soil vent/stack was a 3" pipe and that it should be a 4". I measured up a few neighbours and all seem to be 4".

Is this extra 1" making a difference?
I know there is a possibility that the smell might be coming from elsewhere, but could installing a 4" pipe stop the problem?

The soil vent pipe should be 100mm (4") but its doubtful if the reduced diameter is the cause of the smell. If you're getting the smell outside then there's every possibility that it could be coming from a manhole or maybe even directly from the septic tank or perhaps the pipe isn't the correct height.

Is the septic tank close to the house? Is the smell more noticeable on certain days?....check wind direction. Is the vent pipe the required height? It should extend above the eaves of the house.

Have a look at pages 8 - 12 (Section 1) of Technical Guidance Document H.

If the pipe is for ventilation only (ie a dry section) then pipe is allowed to be 75mm (3").

But as Muffler said, the height is mroe important then the diameter in terms of smells
