Am I missing something ? Theory Test FAQs

    Just been on http://www.theorytest.ie looking to see if I need to do a theory test to add a category A to my full B licence.

    Looking through the FAQs, I found a relevant question;
    "What do I do if I wish to add another category to my current driving licence?", but if I was there yet, I can't find an answer on the site.

    Is it not the norm to supply answers to FAQs ?
    Rant over,

    In a nutshell I have a full class B (car licence for 15 years), and I am considering working my way through class A. But where to start.
    Do I need to sit a theory test, or will my current full licence exempt me from this section, and will I need to have 2 separate licences while on an A provisional?

    Rgds,
    SD13

    I did that very thing in 2009 (after riding bikes for 12 years and letting all my licenses lapse. Bugga!), and am doing it again now for trucks. You'll need to do the motorcycle theory test, get your learner permit, then do IBT - I escaped that bloody thing, at least! The learner permit will indeed be separate from your current full license for the length of time you need it. When you pass the bike test the good folk at the license office will add category "A" to your drivers license. It's free, and no more separate learner permit thingy after that.

    Thanks for that jimgoose,
    As I feared, it just gets more and more complicated, and expensive...
