Watched ths news report here about a week ago and sent it to all my friends and thought I'd be the coolest guy at the water cooler.

But instead of a surprised shock I got the "Meh.." and everyone seemed to know about this. Now I'm not a dumbass (at least I didn't think I was). I work in IT, but this security risk came as a big surprise.

Can you please honestly vote if you know about this EXIF data stuff?

Means when you snap a picture with your android and post it online, someone can track the GPS coordinates of where you snapped it.

    thanks

P.S: this is a private poll, so no one can see what you voted

yeah i knew. but you can turn it off.

why is it a paranoia thing to geotag photos?

Yes I did. EXIF data isn't only used for geo-tagging either. If you know what you're looking for you can also tell what applications were used for processing a photo.

Post a photo of yourself at home today. Then let the world know via boards/other that you're abroad on holidays in three months...

only 1 out of 10 people didn't know... but anyways this is Android forum, so I'm probably barking up the wrong tree.. An average techy wouldn't know probably

Clicked the link, saw the word "predator" in the headline, knew it would be sensationalised beyond all recognition. Unsurprisingly, I was right.

Firstly, geo-tagging has to be enabled, it's hasn't been on by default on any phone I've ever had. Secondly, cameras have the same functionality. Thirdly, do they really believe that "predators" are trawling through photos looking for the location they were taken so that they can go there?

And the "average techy" is most definitely aware of EXIF data

I think the iPhone 4 has it enabled by default and I'd say even a lot of non-techies would be aware of it to a degree since the likes of the iPhone gallery app will show you a world map with pins showing the location of each photo taken. Add to that geo-tagged tweets, facebook checkins etc so the idea of your location being tagged shouldnt really be anything new to people.

    Yes, nothing new.

A large number of iPhone users seem to be unaware of this though. I have tipped off a few people that may not have realised their location is embedded in the images they have posted.

When I updated my C7 to Nokia Belle geotagging was turned on by default.

That poll is so private I can't even see results
