There's a crowd doing a test dab service in the southeast . Nobody listens to it to be honest . Internet radio rules in Ireland , not enough choice on dab

No one listens? State your source!

There are no figures, and no way of knowing for sure how many people are listening to DAB in the south-east.

But, empirically, Zenith Classic Rock does receive texts from people listening on DAB.

My source is decies lol. There's no bloody choice out there , unless they come to some agreement with the bbc to rebroadcast their stations on it it's dead in the water!! And before somebody jumps in with the rehashed bleeding obvious arguments why that can't happen, well something has to change fast . Smart phones and the likes of tune in apps in conjunction with the likes of all you can eat data , means currently Internet radio is king. Interestingly in the south east test dab they rebroadcast talksport radio from the uk. Dab needs to grow fast NOW or die a slow death.

Why did you buy a digital radio if you live in Galway? Did you not think to check the coverage first???

Yes the Total Broadcast mux in the South East does carry TalkSport, which is not otherwise available in the area. Also Nova, 4FM, Sunshine, 2XM, UCB and Phantom.

I agree though that DAB needs to be rolled out commercially NOW, and bring with it extra choice (not just rebroacasts of FM station) - otherwise internet-delivered radio will dominate and that will remove control of the media from the BAI (opinions?), but more seriously, remove sources of revenue from domestic broadcasters.

I fail to see where you think there's a demand for BBC radio services in this country.

Furthermore the liklihood of BBC services being rebroadcast on an Irish DAB network is highly unlikely.

You are right about the slow death unless something is done soon.

I think there is a large listenership for BBC radio in this country, most people I know listen to R4, World Service, 5live and BBC 6, I bought an Internet radio to do this which also has DAB, if beeb were on DAB would have just bought one of those radios (though I love NPR which is internet only over here), having said that BBC arent going to provide their stations for free I'm sure. The DAB signal is fuller and more consistent than FM (in Dublin at least) so all stations should invest in it because in the same way as for TV, Digital is the future.

RTE broadcasts BBC WorldService on RTE Choice.

Huge amount of people listen to BBC Radio 4 on LW in Ireland and quite a few would listen to the sports coverage on Radio 5.

Maybe you should say that to retailers/radio manufacturers - as hardly any radios for sale nowadays in shops in the republic have Long Wave - including aftermarket car radios.
