Nice motor. The 3.0d quattro is rumoured to be the better drive.

Was actually looking at that one too, kind of in two minds but leaning towards the 4.2

Might be better value buying an Irish one. Also, a 07 might be a better buy. Save thousands of purchase price and save a few hundred on the tax too:D

That one would be over 40k landed here with vrt.

    Irish 08 (without nav)

Irish 07 (private) although the white is only for a certain type of customer IMO

Only true if you fill the S5 with diesel before driving it.

The OP one has the semi auto, paddles and the nav etc. probably worth the extra. Although that one in Richford has been available a long time, might get it for 33 or so...

 I said better drive, not the fastest.

"But here I am, driving the 3.0 TDI on mountainous roads near Verona, and I’m having an increasingly good time after my earlier dismay at the S5."

"Also, this car is riding on less aggressive suspension than the S5, so it’s more supple and fluid and the nose-heaviness is better masked."

The TDi is undoubtadly the better car from an economy/power blend. Resale in a year or two will reflect that.

Not interested in BMW have a serious dislike to the driving position and the cabin is i feel plain, tho I do omit that they are seriously good looking car from the outside. My opinion, i just seem to have a thing for Audi's

having been in both and being a big fan of the e92 I'd take the S5 anyday. BMW wins out on the 'fun', tail happy driving experience. S5 wins out by miles on the interior and day to day practicaly with it's ride quality on oem tyres and bad weather confidence that the 4 wheel drive give you. No need to hold your breath every time you approach a greasy roundabout! 335i of that vintage also seem to have some engine issues.

However looking at what is currently available you would likely pick up a 335i for 50/60% of the price of the equivalent year S5. At that price difference as you say the 335 is a no brainer, but possibly that brings the quattro 3.0tdi back into the equation. The posts above that it's the better handling car than the S5 are laughable, but it is a great unit.

Thanks for the advice, def need to book a test drive on the S5 and A5 3.0tdi though my heart is on the S5 at the mo, but that could all change with the test drives. In no panic yet to purchase will wait till next quarter prices may fall a bit more.

God... the mere thoughts of comparing a 4.2l V8 Petrol with a 3.0 TDI is... astonishing considering this is a Motors enthusiast (for the most part) forum.

S5 all the way in that comparison...
But for me, the 335i just makes a helluva lot more sense in the grand scheme of things considering it's better in nearly every aspect in my opinion than the S5.

    335i with red interior
PS. Despite your gripes with the interior OP, I don't see anything wrong with this interior - one of my fav colour combinations at the moment.

The S5 and an A5 TDI are not even close to peers, but you should of course test drive yourself. But the cynic in me says if anyone prefers that TDI over a V8 petrol, they should never bother driving a sports petrol engine ever again, they are just doing it totally wrong.
