Pretty easy. The (tourist) buses are generally good but take time. If you are in a hurry internal country flights can be as cheap as the bus but I think you generally have to book them from the country to get the cheapest prices.

The only problems we had were travel agents lying about the bus being direct. e.g. when going from Cusco to Copacabana we paid a small bit extra for a direct bus but when we got on the bus we were told it was oversold and we had to get another bus that had a change over.

We also met a few people who had similar problems in Bolivia and Peru but didn't hear of anyone having problems in Chile

Quite easy to get around south America we bused from puerto de iguazu around Argentina into Bolivia and finished up in Peru over two months, never needed to take a flight thankfully because they're not cheap. Border crossings are pretty straight forward, we didn't have any hassle. Travel with bus company 'Tourperu' very comfortable and mainly tourists on board unless you fancy a local bus full of chickens and locals trying to squeeze into our seats which we were stuck on from copacabana to Arequipa!
