    Hi everybody,
Maybe some of you remember me I started a post a few weeks ago about getting a new car myself, Anyway I've decided not to get a new car for myself and to get a brand new car for my wife instead and take her old opel astra for myself anyway my wife does about 20000kms a year and i was wondering what is the best diesel hatchback for her the only car ive looked at so far was the new astra but we didn't like the 1.3 diesel engine as it was too slow, anyway if anyone had any ideas i would appreciate them,

    Thanks,:)

    That's the Kia ceed

To be honest, you'd get a cracking car for say 12k

Oh ok, My wife wants a new car because she might only keep it for 3-4 years and then trade it in for a new car again the oldest she would go would be a 2011 car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭Matthewjohn

I think you should go for a 2010 or 2011 most of the depreciation have been lost at that stage and you could save €10000 if you bought a 2010 instead of a new car

If everyone thought like that there would be no new cars! I bought my current car new, before that always nearly-new (1 year old). I think buying at 1yr and selling around 4yrs is a pretty sound policy. You don't have to go replacing stuff beyond consumables/regular servicing and the depreciation curve is flattened a little.

If you don't mind having an older model I'd say there would be great deals on a '11 C'eed as the new one is just around the corner. However if I were you the new i40 would be very high on the list. Hyundai are still rising as a brand also, depreciation should be on a par with other popular marques.

    Dont laugh.... Skoda Yeti!

    This might be worth considering.

Despite they being shaped like a brick they are good on economy, a nice drive and a comfortable place to be.
We average 50+mpg on motorway runs. I believe the 'greenline' range can do much better.

I just googled the i40 and it's looks well and it has gotten some good reviews too but my wife wants a small car mainly as she can't park big cars! The yeti is defiantly on the list my uncle has one and swears by it.

The Kia optima seems to be a nicer car than he i40, haven't seen any in the flesh, but they're a handsome yoke.

Now that I would certainly take a look at.
Any idea as to when this is coming along and a guess at the price/tax band?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It's pretty much a Hyundai i40, I'd expect the tax to be the same.

More than likely that twin turbo 1.7 that's in the Sportage.

Thats a genuinely great looking car, not just great looking for a kia. The sportage is a very nice design too I must say.
In relation to the OP, he mentioned a new astra. I had one of those on hire for a few days. I found it to be quite a nice chassis to throw around and would be a very cabable car with the right engine. The tiny diesel is not the right engine though by a long shot.
With a 25k budget, I dont know why you would be considering 1.3 atras anyway.Id be looking towards nearly new passats, that kia optima etc.

My wife wants a small car as she is the only one in it most of the time and also she cant park big car and she likes hatchbacks as they are very practical for there size.

Actually:o...I meant the i30 because that's the sector the OP mentioned.

Re the i40, I think I prefer it to the Optima. There's a bit too much going on in the Kia and to my eyes it looks a little like a XF pastiche but hey...that's just personal taste.

I'd say it's like-for-like with the i40, they're pretty identical under the skin. Highest power in i40 is 138 I think and that's auto only.

    I'd go for --> Honda Civic <-- 1.4 vtec 22 k brand new

The UK spec Optima which I assume we will get here doesn't look as nice as the American/promotional spec model that seems to be doing the rounds on the web imo.

Reviews and photos from here: http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/RoadTestsHistory/Kia-Optima-1.7-CRDi-2-Tech/261251/

I'm not gone on the design/shape of the dashboard of the Optima either, personally I think the i40 looks better packaged.

Have people gone crazy round here, do many people recommending Kias and not one Alfa shout.

Op, I'd say the Alfa Romeo Guilietta 1.6 JTD could be exactly what you're looking for. Stunning car.

Going to look at the yeti i30 and golf tomorrow hopefully will see something promising

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 Hamie

I test drove the golf yeti and i30 today was very impressed with the golf and the yeti very solid comfortable lovely to drive I liked the i30 but it wasn't very solid on the road and the engine was noisy its still a very good car for the price though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Was that the new 2012 model i30?

    Fcuk that sh1t!

Leave her in whatever sh1tbox she's driving now and buy yourself something decent.

I don't get why they don't get 2 decent cars?

I was looking at the skoda faeba Monte Carlo. Really nice car, at about 17k. Was advised to get the petrol over the diesel model as it would roughly take about 4 years to make any savings on the diesel model doing about 30k a year and costing an extra 2kish. Really nice car.

We are my wife is getting a new car and i'll take her 08 Astra I'm fairly happy with that rather than having to change the two cars instead

New i30 is available now. Looking at a few on carzone there, the wheels are lost under those arches.

It does look tempting il have to go back to my Hyundai dealer when they get it back in stock also what sort of used hatchbacks could you get for 25k like a merc or an Audi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

From the likes of BMW, Audi and Merc all you will get is a poorly speced overpriced hatchback.

The new Honda Civic is also available:

We have narrowed our choices down to the golf focus or yeti all 1.6 diesels does anyone have any opinions on these

I'll probably be laughed out of here but that budget would get a top spec Megane and with some haggling (cash price, etc) you'd probably have some change.

My old man has been through 3 Megane saloons in 11 years and is now on a Fluence which he loves. We couldn't fault them. Okay, 1 window regulator went but that was fixed free. Hardly the end of the world.

5 year warrenty (well his fluence does), very easy on juice (even around town) and a 2 year service interval.

Much like anything else, look after it and it will look after you.

Never considered the megane and the warranty does sound tempting il have to look at that aswell I used to have a petrol megane never had any major problems with it either thanks

Very dull cars for a €25k budget. I'd be going for the Alfa Gulietta to be honest, best looking hatch on the road by far, and decent engine choice too, both petrol and diesel. Failing that, I'd be looking at the new Civic. The 2.2 diesel is band A and less than 24k for the entry. Much, much better engine than either the Golf or Focus.
A Yeti in anything other than 4WD is pointless, and the 4WD ones are very expensive.

Edit: Used options could be either of these:

Resale of these in a few years will be a lot higher if you sell them during a cold spell! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,930 ✭✭✭GavMan

Would also 2nd a Gulietta. I've a 08 147 myself and can't fault it despite the horror stories. Regular servicing and responsible usage will see you right

That car is lovely I love subarus I also used to have a legacy but sold it last year as the running costs were huge I don't think the wife would go for it though she's not the Subaru type

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 Hamie

The gullietta looks great and knowing alfa probably drives great aswell but I would be concerned about their used values as we would be selling the car again in 3 or 4 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭TheZ

I want to like the Gulietta but whenever I see one in the flesh they look insubstantial/like a v small car whereas a golf or focus looks more substantial

    obviously a subjective thing

cloverlead Gulietta looks great in photos but not seen one in the flesh yet

reason Golfs are so popular is trade in time they hold their value - friend is trading in a 2007 golf 1.6 (petrol I think) with over 100km on the clock for a new 2012 1.6 tdi r line for about 15k

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 Hamie

The r line is the model we were looking at aswell I also have another question about the yeti the dealer told us that the 1.6 diesel and the 2.0 diesel were the same price which one is the better engine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Ge the 2.0 if you can. OH's dad has a tiguan with the same engine and raves about the power and economy

    (granted his is 140hp)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 Hamie

No it's the 110 bhp while the 1.6 is the 105 bhp

    Hamie wrote: »

The 2.0 litre will have more torque which is more important than bhp for a diesel engine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 Hamie

Oh okay then do would think it you be better the look at 2.0 versions of the cars I was looking at rather than 1.6s

    Still... go for the Civic!!!!
Also, the Gulietta are actually holding their value very well. Rarity sees to that. In fact, many Alfa 159's are holding their value better than the Passat, also down to rarity.
But Civic before Golf times ten really. No comparison.

Hi again my wife and I have narrowed down our choices to to a ford focus 2.0 tdci zetec or a Volkswagen golf 2.0 tdi edition r i'm leaning towards the vw but I would like to know peoples on these cars please

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I'd actually go for the golf, even if it's soon to be defunct, the focus is all wrong looking,
