Quick query on flaked barley. Doing my first stout soon. The way it came in the bag the grains don't appear to be crushed. Is it ok to mash as is or do i have to crush?

No its fine , does not need to be crushed, as it basically is anyway. It is unmalted dried barley pressed through rollers, giving the flat flake. . It needs to be mashed with a base malt as it lacks enzymes needed for conversion. Good luck with the stout :)

I deicided to give the homebrew companies irish stout mash kit a go. I don't know the recipe because it just comes in a bag all mixed in but it looks like maris otter, roasted barley and what I thought was flaked oats, but looks like its actually flaked barley. I cant see if theres any other grain in there. I havnt opened it yet so I dont know what hop varieties I got, it came with US-05 and a whirlfloc tablet.

Think Ill put it in the pressure barrel and top it up with some nitrogen see what I get.

An most importantly the heat gelatinase the starch allowing it to be converted by amalysis in malt
