Advice On my new job

Hi I went for an interview for an accounts payable role. I have three years experience in accounts payable but didnt do all tasks in department. My tasks were the basics. Scanning invoices and processing them and dealing with customer queries. Payment runs, reconciling accounts and more in depth accounting procedures I did not take part in.

Basically I am very worried going to the job on monday. The team consists of 6 people so I am guessing alot of the more in depth processes will be comming my way. On the interview itself I couldnt believe how it went. The interviewer was talking more than me and he was basically begging me to come to the team  I know I will be ok but I think he makes it out that I was doing payment runs and tougher tasks in my previous job. Obviously I never told him any negatives and I couldnt actually believe he didnt ask me much questions.

Anyway Im ****tting it at the moment going in on monday and I am gonna get all these difficult tasks thrown at me. Yes I have three years experience in Accounts payable but where I worked we had 30/40 people in our department. All I did were the basics. Scanning invoices and processing them.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks

Anyone that worked in accounts payable and can give advice much appreciated. I just think I have thrown myself in the deep end. I dont think I have the skills for the role. Probably just my nerves and confidence getting to me.:o

No offence to people working in accounts ...but rocket science it ain't :D

I'm sure you'll get some training on how exactly they do things in this new outfit and with some diligence and cop-on you'll be fine.

    Deep breaths ...it'll be grand.

Thanks pal! Its just confidence issues. I should be grand. My main concern was that the team only had 5 people on it. Where I worked before hand we had 30 staff and I never took control of the more difficult tasks. With six people on our team it looks likely bank reconcialiations and payment runs will be thrown at me and he will expect me to know. Like I said above he didnt ask me much questions about my role in previous job he was talking more than me. I have never been to an interview likw that experience it was unreal. I got a call half hour after interview to say I had the job. And trust me goin by the salary I wasnt expecting that at all. I even had second thoughts of going to interview cause I thought it was beyond my experience.

Yomamma. Best of luck in the new job. I worked in Accounts myself for several years and moved around organisations a number of times. I found myself in the same boat as you. But you should take comfort in the fact that many organisations use different systems, but the approach is very much the same. I found it helpful when I came across something I didn't know or had little experience in, to call an old colleague for advice. Also someone on the new team will have some experience so best to try and get on with everyone and everyone will help you. The interviewer obviously saw something in you and most accept that there will be a period where you're getting used to systems, procedures and getting to know others on the team and their roles. I think you'll be grand, best of luck to you.

    Good luck today!

If the off chance you read this before heading into work...

Don't be worried. I went from being a software engineer to financial controller a few years ago. No previous experience! Accounts is not difficult. Just ask the people to show you the ropes of their system, make sure you understand any "weird" ways they deal with things (e.g. I had to put certain things into a certain suspense account...) and in general come across as friendly and a good listener. You will be absolutely fine!
