Problem with printer

OK there is probably a very simple answer to this and if there is I cannot find it. I have a printer connected to an XP desktop by parrlelle. The Desktop is connect to a wireless router by cable and a Vista laptop is connected to the wireless network by WiFi. Both computers are in the same workgroup. The desktop is also sharing a second hard drive installed in it. The laptop can browse the network and see the desktop and can browse the shared drive. It can even see the shared printer but when I try to connect to the printer I get an error message saying I must be typing the name of the printer incorrectly and it cannot be connected to.

What I have tried: I updated the drivers on the desktop. I un-installed the printer, reinstalled it, re shared it and renamed it all to no avail. Have rebooted both computers and the router.

After changing the name of the printer I can now only see the printer by its old name.

This should be easy peasy but there is something I am missing and I cant see it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Further to this. I had two laptops, both running Vista. I got one of them working by turning on printer sharing on it. Thought printer sharing would only have to be turned on on the the machine the printer is attached to. The second not so.

It gives an error message saying "0x00000709 Check you typed the printer name correctly and that it is attached to the network."

The same happens when trying to add a printer through Word or Notepad. I get told "Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable" I have also stopped and restarted the Spooler Service, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Client For Microsoft Windows but still no luck.

    Any help would be great.

Mind you, printer sharing from XP to Vista or Windows 7 isn't as straight forward as it is from XP to XP

The XP drivers won't work (although some printer installers offer to include the drivers for other operatings systems, in case you want to share), so you can't just browse the network and connect the printer.

You will have to go through the whole rigmarole of manually adding a new printer, installing the Vista driver and then configure the network port.

OK Thanks. I will give it a shot but I have another Vista and a Windows 7 laptop and they can both see and print to the shared printer. Its just the Dell one that I am having problems.

Also checked the HP Support page and the latest driver release has Vista support.

    Thanks for your reply.

The easy way out is PrinterShare (formerly PrintAnywhere), wich will install its own driver and allows you to share your printer via Internet or LAN, zero config. Think Skype for Printers. ;)

Just found a resolution on another site and it worked. Seems a bit strange to me but there you go.

The suggestion was to set up the printer as a local printer on the laptop.

    Control Panel, Printer's, Add Printer.
Add local printer, select Create New Port, leave at default as Local Port.
Type in your full computer name the printer is shared on and the name of the printer that it is shared under,
    E.G. \\mycomputer\hplaserj

For those that might not be sure your full computer name is found in Control Panel, System, Computer Name.
This worked for me so I hope it can help someone else.

Didn't do the job for me. Still would not connect to the remote printer.
    But thanks for your help.
