Any pointers / links to list of recognised colleges for counselling courses with qualifications?

I have attempted to go through the major colleges/universities one by one but wish to review all the available option for certificate/degree/postgraduate qualifications if possible

Took a look at a few here but there seems to be little or no joined up descriptions / lists of places offering same

Also saw the NCPII (?) which had courted controversy here no longer appears to have a web site - anyone know what the story there is

    Many thanks

yes, well, as I moderate this forum in my spare time, as a volunteer, I do tidy up threads now and again. But colleges achieve accreditation by various professional organisations (how many are there? Quite a few: some reputable, some not so much) and they also lose that accreditation now and again.

NCPII changed name a couple of times, maybe in an attempt to lose the odour that followed them around.

Maybe you'd like to put together a list of courses yourself for us? But you'd have to revise it annually.

I wont! Well the reason I ask is that I have came a number of individuals advertising "counselling services" and listing various qualifications from what appear to be at most basic (diploma only) to unknown. I am attempting to do some research to try and figure this area out

Take a look at this link for instance LINK for examples

I suppose in the interest of those taking up such counselling services it would be be valuable to separate the nosey neighbour / sociopath from a properly run counselling service provided by fully qualified and valid (?) accredited professionals...

I personally do not believe it would be advisable to divulge life story / significant problems to someone not giving recognisable or at best basic qualifications

Why not look up the websites of accrediting bodies such as IACP, IAHIP, PSI, APPI (among others I'm sure) and see what courses they recommend. You can always contact these bodies directly if you have a query about the validity of a particular course. As Julius Caesar suggested, a search on this forum will give you loads of info on accreditation, courses etc.

Thanks KK but I believe that actually part of the problem...there are so many relevant (?) bodies. As JC said some are reputable, some not so much and then there are many counsellors some with proper qualifications/accreditation, some listed with only basic qualifications, some with none and some with dubious accreditation. It is very difficult to seperate the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

It is quite scarey to think that some of the 'counsellors' listed outhere are nothing more than than someone with a sign saying so....

I think most will agree the organisations I mentioned would be among the reputable ones. If your course is listed by one of those organisations you should be fine.

The most reputable ones are EAP (European Association for Psychotherapy), this is the highest accreditation in Ireland you can get. Then IAHIP (Irish Association for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy), and then IACP (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). As a therapist you have to build up a mimimum of 450 hours of clientwork before you can become accredited so it makes sure the person has enough experience to work with clients and are following the codes of Ethics set down by the accreditation bodies. I would not touch a therapist who isn't accredited. But how and ever there are still those who do get accredited that I wouldn't send my cat to let alone myself. The best thing to do is to interview a number of people to see who you feel comfortable with. Your gut instinct plays a major role here...so perhaps trust that. Hope this helps.

Please see Finding a Therapist/Counsellor/Psychologist stickied thread.

I'm locking this as there's nothing of substance added.
